About the role:

The position is responsible for supporting the R&D team’s initiative in leading and executing projects for bakery mixes, breading’s, batters, and drink mixes. The food scientist must have a proven record of completing assigned projects with guidance. The candidate must have a technical background and understanding of analytical methods used in testing physical and chemical characteristics of mixes. The candidate must be self-motivated, detailed-oriented, and a creative thinker with strong interpersonal skills. This position requires work in a cross-functional environment with strong communication and teamwork skills. The role requires reporting under the supervision of the R&D manager.


Responsibilities:

·        Manage projects as assigned and ensures they are completed in a timely manner

·        Record and organize internal data, written and verbal reports, summaries, and evaluations

·        Support the sales team through sample generation and technical assistance

·        Assist in plant trials for new products or new processes and provide detailed overview to the team on what was successful and what needs revisions.

·        Works cross-functionally with Quality, Production, Purchasing, and Sales to ensure the success of projects from bench-top through commercialization

·        Ensure technical knowledge of the industry is continually up to date with an emphasis on the process, products, and ingredients that are used internally and those that may offer a competitive advantage

·        Provides technical support to both internal and external customers

·        Monitor the collection of data and approve completed R&D technician work deliverables.

·        Test and evaluate ingredient and finished good expiration and when possible, advise on shelf-life extension.

·        Update batch records and host preproduction scheduling meeting.

·        Provide clear direction on what ingredients are allowed as substitutes or replacements.

·        Required to approve and place product on hold.

·        Required to provide instructions on how to rework product that have been placed on hold.

·        Available to perform ad hoc projects that may arise.


Candidate requirements:

·        B.S. in food science or related science from an accredited university

·        3-5 years of food industry experience covering a combination of food manufacturing, research and development, commercialization, food safety, and quality management systems

·        1 year of bakery and/or breader/batter experience, including formulating

·        Strong planning, organizing, and communication skills

·        Solid technical background, ability to understand product formulation techniques, sensory evaluation, processing technology, regulatory compliance, GMP, HACCP, Organic

·        Knowledge of Microsoft Office

·        Knowledge of ESHA Genesis software is a plus

·        Bilingual English/Spanish is a plus

·        Ability to taste test all products produced in our plant that may include certain food allergens

·        Must be able to travel 5-10% for training, work with new customers, and purchase ingredients from the supermarket when needed to conduct finished good verifications
