Job Summary

We are looking for individual to join our client’s team as Phlebotomist. You will be responsible for taking blood from patients and properly labeling samples with the patient information and lab test orders from the doctor.


Job Description

  • Draw blood for laboratory testing and diagnostic procedures in all areas and for all patient populations, including newborn, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients, on a rotational basis in accordance with established protocols and procedures.
  • Provide instruction to patients to obtain test samples as required; appropriately assesses patient limitations; exhibits appropriate behaviors to patients; collects specimens.
  • Always maintain strict patient confidentiality (HIPAA)
  • Identify patient's name and date of birth before venipuncture is performed.
  • Follow procedures on identification of outpatient and specimens and performs related documentation.
  • Understand and practice the elements of the National Patient Safety Goals
  • Follow HHC policy and procedures for the clinical laboratory.
  • If needed, register patients in EPIC System
  • Maintain required records and logs; files ancillary log sheets; submits and/or records statistics daily; performs other clerical tasks in support of blood drawing activities.
  • Assist in procuring, inspecting, cleaning, and storing of related phlebotomy/laboratory equipment including venipuncture trays, carts.
  • Adhere to infection control practices including standard precautions, isolation techniques, tray decontamination, and recommended hand washing techniques; follows all other safety protocols.
  • Perform related work, such as weekly decontamination of phlebotomy trays and completing individual monthly log.
  • Assist in training new phlebotomists.
  • Answer and direct calls to appropriate department and relay messages in a timely manner.
  • Address issues or situations that require immediate or additional attention (e.g., adverse reactions to phlebotomy) and informs the supervisor or other appropriate leadership of such situations.
  • Attend and participates in continuing education and in-service programs.
  • Participates in internal/external quality assurance, performance improvement activities and programs, departmental and team/committee meetings, and facility-wide training.
  • Adheres to dress code policy, neat and clean appearance is recommended.


Skills Required

  • 2 years Phlebotomy experience in Hospital, Commercial.
  • Laboratory, Blood Bank.


Education/Training/Certifications

  • Completed High School (Diploma or GED)
  • Phlebotomy Technician Certification (CPT) required.
  • AHA BLS required.
  • Preferred: HIPPA Certificate
  • Preferred: Control Certificate


Additional Requirements

  • Malpractice Insurance - All clinical workers are required to have active individual Medical Malpractice. A copy must be provided prior to start of assignment. All clinical workers licensed by the state of NY are required to provide.
  • Shift Time: 11:30 PM-7:30 AM
  • Rotating weekends is a requirement, and workers must report as scheduled including holidays. Please see the shift time, hours per week/day on the request and ensure your worker will be able to commit to the schedule provided by the facility.
