Overview

As Deputy CISO, you will be a senior leader within Viasat’s Security Engineering organization and will lead its cybersecurity governance capabilities by driving the strategic planning, development, and execution of enterprise-wide cybersecurity initiatives in a fast-paced, global service provider environment.


The Deputy CISO also establishes credible connections with internal and external stakeholders and cultivates a robust cybersecurity landscape, while furthering Viasat’s cybersecurity and risk management posture.


The Deputy CISO is expected to play a critical role in the development and administration of the department’s strategy, roadmap, and governance model, and will collaborate with the CISO and other key Viasat security and business personnel to develop and communicate Viasat’s cybersecurity strategy, roadmap, and risk assessment to executive management, Viasat’s Board of Directors, and appropriate third parties as required.


Utilizing their understanding of cybersecurity risk sources, reference frameworks, and mitigation strategies, the Deputy CISO will prioritize cybersecurity investments to deliver risk outcomes that reduce the likelihood and impact of a cybersecurity incident.


Responsibilities

  • Understand the evolving threat landscape and adapt the security governance program to effectively understand, mitigate, and report upon cybersecurity risk in a rapidly changing technical and business environment
  • Support the overarching cybersecurity strategy and own the vision, strategy, and roadmap for security governance activities.
  • Foster security awareness and transparency by developing, maintaining, and reporting upon the governance program’s key performance indicators/metrics.
  • Interface with internal and external auditors and other third parties to execute cybersecurity-related audit and assessment activities. Analyze risk and audit findings and document, recommend, and report upon the mitigation status of identified gaps to Viasat leadership
  • Be a key interface to Viasat’s external cybersecurity information sharing organizations, as well as law enforcement, intelligence community, and/or appropriate national defense or critical infrastructure protection agencies, and facilitate bilateral information sharing
  • Mentor team members, enhancing their technical and professional development, and promoting their career growth
  • Develop processes and relationships to maintain strong oversight of vendors, business partners, and other third parties to manage and govern Viasat’s 3rd party and supply chain cybersecurity risk
  • Demonstrate a strong understanding of technical controls used to govern, identify, protect, detect, respond, and recover from cybersecurity threats and attacks
  • Collaborate with and influence cross-functional stakeholders to adopt a security mindset, communicate and enforce security policies and standards, identify security weaknesses, and proactively manage and report upon cybersecurity risks
  • Promote a “secure by design” framework across product development lifecycles, and champion a “shift-left” mindset for addressing security issues and items of significant risk


Qualifications


  • 15+ years of experience leading medium to large-scale security organizations (100-250+ employees, budgetary responsibility of $25-$150M), or appropriate similar information systems, compliance, and/or regulatory organizational leadership experience
  • Prior CISO or Deputy CISO experience preferred
  • Prior experience working in global telecommunications or internet service provider organizations, as well as working with government and other highly regulated environments, is preferred.
  • Possess excellent interpersonal, relationship building, and influencing skills; has demonstrated success in influencing key corporate and industry decision-makers and business partners to build positive working relationships and in gaining support for the cybersecurity strategy and initiatives.
  • Uses excellent written/verbal communication and presentation skills to foster cybersecurity awareness and advocacy across diverse stakeholders, including senior executives, customers, technical staff, end users, board members, and/or other key external stakeholders
  • Deep understanding of cybersecurity program planning and sequencing, including governance, risk management, architecture, technology onboarding, vulnerability management, awareness and training, and third-party risk management. Experience in the development, implementation, and monitoring of supporting processes.
  • Strong technical foundation, including security architecture, vulnerability management, threat modeling, assessment and testing, and secure software development lifecycles.
  • Knowledge of common information security management frameworks, such as ISO/IEC 27001, and NIST 800-53/171. Experienced in other cybersecurity regulatory and compliance regimes (e.g., SOX, SOC2, DFARS, CMMC, PCI, etc.).
  • Ability to anticipate technological developments and develop or enhance existing capabilities, policies and procedures to protect the evolution of Viasat’s network
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, Information Systems, Computer Science, or similar technical discipline, required
  • Graduate-level technical or management degree, preferred
  • Security certifications: CISSP, CISA or CISM, or similar, required.
  • Must be able to obtain a United States Top Secret Clearance
