Why DSPs are critical:

In 1981, Congress amended the Social Security Act, allowing states “to waive” the requirement that funds for supporting people with disabilities had to be used for institutional care. Those funds could instead be used for services provided in an individual’s home or community.

Today in Pennsylvania, about 60,000 people with disabilities use these funds to lead inclusive lives and participate in their communities. But participation sometimes requires support. Enter the Direct Support Professional (DSP).


What DSPs do:

DSPs partner with individuals to help them achieve their outcomes identified in their Individual Support Plan (ISP). This may include:

· Helping someone take care of a home, manage their finances, or learn to cook.

· Exercising, taking walks, swimming, playing a sport like pickleball or basketball together to help someone achieve a physical fitness goal.

· Going places with a person so that they can safely explore new interests, such as gaming or bowling, or so they have opportunity to order, pay, or ask for help in various settings.

· Volunteering together as a means of improving social interaction skills or to simply feel a sense of purpose and connection to communities in need.

· Helping someone study for a driver’s permit, so they can one day get a driver’s license, drastically increasing the opportunities available to them.

· Providing hands-on personal care, which allows a person to continue to live in a family home.


People in our community currently looking for support:

-A man in Tullytown, looking for support one evening a week starting at 4:30PM for three or four hours to improve social skills by going to restaurants, movies, bowling, and stores or to go for walks and bike rides.

-A young woman in Warrington, looking for support on Mondays and Wednesdays from 10AM-3PM to volunteer

together, cook and meal plan, work out at the Y, and go for walks.

-A young man in Perkasie who would like to get a job in gaming development, looking for someone a few hours

one day a week to share his interest in gaming and media and to help him set goals, manage time, and explore

new opportunities.


Specific Job Requirements:

· At least 18 years of age.

· High school diploma or equivalent.

· Valid driver’s license with access to a privately maintained and insured vehicle.

· Completion of pre-employment process, including motor vehicle record and criminal background checks.

· Applicants with degrees in Special Education, Psychology, Social Work, or other related disciplines are encouraged to apply.


Who is R3 Waiver?

R3 Waiver is a provider agency authorized by the Pennsylvania Office of Developmental Programs (ODP) to provide support to individuals in Bucks, Montgomery, and Philadelphia counties, who receive what is today referred to as “waiver funding.” Our DSPs work as little as 2 hours per week or much more than that. They support one individual or more than one. For you, this can be something you do in addition to your regular career, or this can be your career.
