The Office of Principal has as its primary purpose to provide educational leadership of Bishop Canevin High School in accordance with the mission statement, the Incorporated By-laws, and the Service Agreement with the Diocese of Pittsburgh.
The Principal is the educational leader and facilitator of the faith community and bears the responsibility for integrating faith and culture within the school.
The Principal is primarily responsible for achieving the school's mission by maintaining and developing a school strong in academic achievement, counseling, and guidance services and by providing ample programs to meet the co-curricular and extra-curricular needs of the students.
The Principal works closely with the Board of Directors and, in varying degrees, with other groups within the school community to provide leadership in establishing the high quality of Catholic education the teaching staff delivers.
The Principal is to respond to all Stakeholders to ensure the high quality of Catholic education.
The Department for Catholic Schools evaluates the Principal through procedures established by the Board of Members.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
● Faith Community/Catholic Character;
● Ensures that the Catholic dimension of the school is developed and promoted among students, faculty, staff, and parents in cooperation with the Board of Members;
● Employs faculty and staff whose values are compatible with the mission of the school;
● Maintains a discipline program with the Assistant Principal (s) which is consistent with the Catholic nature of the school;
● Provides opportunities for school liturgies and paraliturgical services in conjunction with the Campus Minister;
● Ensures that students, faculty, and staff have awareness of the global family of social justice issues;
● Monitors compliance with the Diocesan requirements by ensuring that all employees fulfill all state-mandated clearances, as well as Protecting God’s Children and the Catholic Identity And Mission Clause;
● Works with the Chaplain and Consultant/Director for Catechesis to ensure that Catholic teaching as outlined by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops;
(USCCB) is maintained throughout the curriculum.
A. School Policies and Procedures
● Provides input into periodic review of the philosophy and mission statement of the school;
● Implements Board policy concerning academic affairs, student affairs, athletic affairs, and campus ministry affairs;
● Votes at all Board meetings as an ex-officio member;
● Prepares and presents a written report at each Board meeting on internal school matters that have emerged since the prior meeting;
● Assists the Board in the development of strategic, short, and long-term plans;
● Ensures compliance with all accreditation agencies;
● Complies with all terms of the FPDT Agreement.
B. Staff Recruitment/Development
● Creates and maintains an environment within the school that fosters strong morale;
● Hires faculty and staff, making sure that all employees conform with all diocesan requirements, including all state-mandated clearances and Protecting God’s Children, as well as understanding the requirements of the Catholic Identity And Mission Clause;
● Develops a Faculty/Staff Handbook;
● Provides orientation and ongoing mentoring for new teachers in conjunction with the Principal’s Administrative Team;
● Coordinates agendas for faculty meetings and in-service professional development days;
● Approve all programs and campaigns of the Institutional and Development Offices;
● Monitors strategic and long-range planning and development goals;
● Ensures the development and implementation of a marketing plan for the school;
● Seeks to understand the school's religious, demographic, and socioeconomic composition as it impacts the school and its future.
C. School Policies and Procedures
● Meets regularly with the Institutional Advancement team (Director of Development, Director of Alumni Relations, Director of Admissions, Director of Communications, etc.) and ensures that goals and objectives are being accomplished;
● Monitors the administration of policy in all areas;
● Develops and updates, in cooperation with the Board of Directors, the strategic plan for the future of the school, including short-term and long-term goals and objectives;
● Communicates the strategic plan, short-term and long-term goals and objectives, and the mission to the school community and the wider community;
● Coordinates Board-approved strategic or long-range plans for the school, ensuring that institutional resources are focused on delivering the desired outcomes;
● Provides the preparation of the annual operational budget with the input from the Administrative Team;
● Submits an annual operating budget for Board approval through the Finance Committee of the Board and the Director of Finance;
● Supervises the fiscal operations of the school through the office of the Director of Finance;
● Oversees school policy regarding the administration of financial aid;
● Oversees school policy regarding the collection of tuition;
● Oversees the supervision of school facilities;
● Ensures proper oversight of the student recruitment effort of the school;
● Attends appropriate diocesan meetings;
● Participates in professional organizations and appropriate professional development activities;
● Monitors the preparation and dissemination of all editions of the Faculty/Staff and Student Handbooks;
● Complies with all terms of the FPDT Agreement.
D. Staff Recruitment/Development
● Creates and maintains an environment within the school that fosters strong morale;
● Hires faculty and staff, making sure that all employees conform with all diocesan requirements, including all state-mandated clearances and Protecting God’s Children, as well as understanding the requirements of the Catholic Identity And Mission Clause;
● Develops a Faculty/Staff Handbook;
● Provides orientation ongoing mentoring for new teachers in conjunction with the Principal’s Administrative Team;
● Coordinates agendas for faculty meetings and in-service professional development days;
● Ensures the quality of the teaching-learning process in cooperation with the Assistant Principal(s) and/or Deans;
● Cultivates leadership and advancement opportunities within the ranks of faculty and staff;
● Hires coaches in consultation with the Director of Athletics;
● Ensures the quality of the Guidance and Counseling Program;
● Ensures that there are appropriate professional development and evaluation systems for all faculty, administration, and staff.
E. Student Affairs
● Works closely with the Assistant Principal and/or Deans;
● Follows diocesan policy regarding suspensions and expulsion of students;
● Supervises the administration of the discipline policies of the school;
● Develops a Student Handbook
● Ensures the timely appointment and supervision of all student activities and moderators;
● Oversees the completion of all official accreditation, diocesan and state reports;
● Works cooperatively with the Business Manager in the development of the annual school budget;
● Communicates the strategic, short-range, and long-range plans to the school community;
● Supervises the development of the school calendar
F. Academic Affairs
● Works closely with the Director of Curriculum and Assessment in curriculum development;
● Collaborates with the Assistant Principal in the assignment of teaching and other professional responsibilities as the needs of the school require;
● Oversees the student registration process;
● Monitors the preparation of the master schedule;
● Oversees the reporting of student progress;
● Oversees the assignment of substitute teachers;
● Manages the school in compliance with all policies of the Diocese of Pittsburgh;
● Directly responsible for the Evaluation and Supervision of the teaching staff, including the Professional Staff and Co-curricular Coaches and Monitors.
