The Urgent Care Clinic (UCC) at the DC Superior Court serves individuals in the criminal legal system who are in need of immediate mental health and/or substance use services. Individuals served by UCC can be referred by a judge, pretrial officer, probation officer or an attorney. This partnership between Pathways to Housing DC, the DC Department of Behavioral Health, DC Addiction Prevention and Recovery Administration and DC Superior Court allows for immediate access to support services and establishes linkages to long-term providers to ensure effective treatment alternatives, prevent repeat offenders, and help our clients recover. The Social Worker has training in co-occurring disorders and provides integrated services along with other members of the UCC team. The UCC is one of the first of its kind in the country to provide immediate substance use and short-term mental health treatment services to those involved in the legal system (many of whom are homeless).
Responsibilities
● Conduct initial Clinical Assessment to determine social service needs.
● Assist clients with access to healthcare, health insurance, and applications for housing and employment.
● Provide psychoeducation on medications.
● Link clients to ongoing outpatient treatment for mental health, substance use or co-occurring treatment.
● Communicate clinic participation with the client’s pretrial worker and probation worker.
● Use GAINS SS to screen clients for co-occurring disorders at the point of intake.
● Complete substance abuse assessments using the ASAM assessment system and determine level of care for substance abuse treatment.
● Provide referral and linkage to intensive outpatient treatment and coordinate transportation to detox, inpatient or residential placement.
● Conduct brief individual counseling and recovery planning.
● Provide coverage in the absence of team members and other related duties as required.
Skills and Abilities Ability to screen, triage, conduct assessments using the CUCC Clinical Intake Assessment tool, and the ASAM assessment system to determine level of care for clients. Extensive knowledge of community resources. Ability to interface with people of various cultural backgrounds and socio-economic status. Knowledge and understanding of the Housing First model. Ability to conduct community outreach and education on the CUCC. Organization, communication and basic computer skills needed. Ability to multitask in a fast paced environment.
Qualifications
● Master’s Degree in Social Work or related field required. Current DC license of LICSW or LPC required.
● Experience working with individuals impacted by the legal system.
● Minimum 5 years’ experience with case management and supportive counseling, using motivational interviewing techniques desired. Experience in harm reduction approach preferred.
● Minimum 2 years of experience working with those who have substance use concerns.
● Experience with co-occurring disorders.
● Experience with public speaking and community engagement is preferred.
● Experience working with multidisciplinary teams.
● Excellent written and verbal communication skills
● Bilingual (English/Spanish) is highly desired.
