Summary
The Cancer Registrar II competently analyzes electronic medical records and extracts clinical, pathological, therapeutic, and epidemiologic data in accordance with established oncology data collection practices and standards. The role requires working independently, exercising sound judgment, and developing skills to deliver accurate results in a timely manner. The Cancer Registrar II gains confidence and cooperation from patients, their family/support groups, and other healthcare providers through competent and effective communication. Adheres to all local, state, and federal regulations, codes, policies, and procedures to ensure privacy and safety while delivering optimal patient care. These principal accountabilities, requirements, and qualifications are not exhaustive but are descriptive of the current job. Management reserves the right to revise the job description or require that other tasks be performed as circumstances change (e.g., emergencies, staff changes, workload, or technical development).
Job Accountabilities:
Registrar Services:
Gathers, reviews, and maintains appropriate and accurate documentation of all cancer patients diagnosed and treated.
Collects, maintains, and updates Cancer Registry follow-up information for the duration of the patient's life and conducts statistical analyses related to collected data, according to policies and procedures, and the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (ACoS).
Ensures that routine and priority tasks are completed within established departmental time frames.
Mentors and fosters a constructive teaching environment that helps students and new registrars build confidence in their skills, knowledge, and abilities.
Assists with special projects as needed.
Clerical:
Performs general clerical tasks, such as answering phones and retrieving, entering, and revising patient electronic health records (EHR).
Prepares and completes accurate documentation related to patients and procedures.
Coordinates tumor boards, including collecting imaging and pathology cases scheduled to be presented, and maintaining AV equipment for meetings.
Compliance & Quality:
Maintains the strictest confidence of all patient protected health information (PHI) and protects all PHI from accidental, intentional, or inappropriate disclosure.
Performs case finding, abstracting, and quality control in compliance with department standards, policies, and procedures, as well as local, state, and federal regulatory agencies to deliver the highest level of patient privacy and care.
Retains certification and completes mandated continuing education requirements to meet facility and regulatory agencies' accreditation and licensure requirements.
Participates in monthly department quality control of abstracts and updates the local database as required.
Education:
Equivalent experience will be accepted in lieu of the required degree or diploma.
Associate's degree in a health-related field or equivalent education/experience.
Completion of an accredited Cancer Registrar training program.
Certification & Licensure:
CTR - Certified Tumor Registrar upon hire.
Typical Experience:
1 year of recent relevant experience.
Skills and Knowledge:
Knowledge of cancer, cancer staging mechanisms, ICD-9/ICD-10 coding systems, American College of Surgeons Facility Oncology Registry Data Standards (FORDS) Manual, and SEER Multiple Primary & Histology Manual.
Understanding of the cancer disease process, including tumor nomenclature, medical terminology, medical procedures, anatomy, and physiology.
Possess written and verbal communication skills to explain sensitive information clearly and professionally to diverse audiences, including non-medical individuals.
Well-developed time management and organizational skills, including the ability to prioritize assignments and work within standardized operating procedures and scientific methods to achieve objectives and meet deadlines.
General knowledge of computer applications such as Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook), CNExT cancer data collection, electronic health records (EHR), and EPIC.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team, accomplishing multiple tasks in an environment with interruptions.
Identify, evaluate, and resolve standard problems by selecting appropriate solutions from established options.
Ensure the privacy of each patient’s protected health information (PHI).
Build collaborative relationships with peers and other healthcare providers to achieve departmental and corporate objectives.
