Job Title: Controls Engineer
Responsibilities & Duties: The Controls Engineer is responsible for the analysis, development, maintenance, and implementation of automation and control systems used by the site. Key responsibilities include:
- Supporting various I/O devices connected to PLCs, including HMI’s, remote I/O, sensors, relays, solenoids, etc., and assisting maintenance personnel in troubleshooting electrical, PLC, pneumatic circuits, and other components associated with automated processes.
- Responding urgently to assigned work, breakdowns, and emergency work orders to assist the maintenance team as needed.
- Ensuring control systems comply with regulatory requirements such as SIL/LOPA assessments.
- Creating and maintaining instrument and electrical drawings for control systems, including motor elementaries and instrument loop sheets.
- Maintaining PLC documentation and archives of PLC programs and machine control drawings.
- Mentoring and sharing knowledge with technicians and technical staff on control system strategies and installations.
- Partnering in the development and maintenance of IT systems and infrastructure, both internally and with external vendors.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, or related field; 3+ years of experience in manufacturing.
- Hands-on experience with Allen Bradley and Rockwell Automation products.
- Understanding of IT and OT network communication protocols (TCP/IP, UDP, DNP3, Modbus, IEC 61850, OPC, OPC UA, PROFINET) and ability to perform packet analysis.
- Knowledge of threats, vulnerabilities, and exploits in ICS environments and mitigation techniques.
- Familiarity with regulatory requirements for ICS environments, including PSM and DHS regulations.
- Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
- Highly organized with a focus on process and time management.
- Ability to work with individuals at all organizational levels and multitask under pressure.
- Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
Work Environment & Physical Demands:
- Willingness to work around dust, chemicals, high pressure, high temperature, loud noises, and running equipment.
- Ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required (hard hat, safety glasses, gloves, steel-toed boots, hearing protection).
- Must be able to lift up to 25 lbs.
