Position Purpose:

Serves in a supervisory position at the water plant and is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the water treatment plant in the absence of the plant manager. Responsibilities include ensuring that an adequate supply of safe, reliable water is available and that it meets all applicable standards. Responsibilities also include the O&M of the treated water storage tanks, wells and the various structures within the surface water system. This is a salaried position requiring a minimum of 40 hours per week. Must possess the ability to work independently and direct the work force in providing necessary assignments of plant operators, maintenance workers and other staff within the plant. Plans, schedules and oversees the operations and maintenance activities of the water plant and is responsible for responding to emergency situations. Works under the direction of the project manager and assume PM responsibilities in their absence.

Primary Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Proficiency and familiarity with the operation of office equipment.
  • Establishing and planning work schedules.
  • Proficiency in word processing, experience with MS Word, Excel, and Google workspace.
  • Preparation of reports for submittal to the Project Manager.
  • Develops guidelines for plant operators to follow in operation of the treatment plant.
  • Pump stations, finished water storage facilities, well pump houses and raw water facilities.
  • Analyzes operating records and laboratory results to determine necessary changes in the operation of the water treatment plant.
  • Prepares daily, weekly, monthly and annual reports as required and all routine reports required for operations of the pumping, supply and purification facilities.
  • Coordinate sampling schedule and laboratory results to maintain regulatory compliance.
  • Develops preventative maintenance schedules for the water treatment plant equipment and system using O&M software program.
  • Develops recommendations for the maintenance and repair activities.
  • Responds to emergency situations.
  • Makes personal recommendations to Project Manager.
  • Supports Distribution and Customer Service Supervisors and Administrative Assistant as needed.
  • Assumes weekly rotating Distribution Manager on call duties.
  • Completes monthly forms for the State and Federal Regulatory Agencies
  • Conducts plant tours and other public relations presentations.
  • Maintains timekeeping records for project.
Qualifications

Education/Experience/Background:

  • High School Diploma/GED is required.
  • Associate's degree: in physical and /or biological sciences. However, will consider courses directly related to water treatment, distribution, and supply, plus at least four years of experience as a water treatment plant operator or other water treatment related experience.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Must demonstrate a thorough knowledge of potable water treatment plant operation and maintenance.
  • Must be computer literate and possess a thorough knowledge of Federal and State law and regulations pertaining to the operation of a water treatment plants.

Required Certification/Licenses/Training:

  • Massachusetts Water Treatment Grade 3 is preferred.

Physical Requirements:

  • Job is at times physically demanding and the employee must occasionally lift and/ or move up to 50 pounds.
