The Department of Chemistry in the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences at West Virginia University is currently accepting applications for a Research Associate.

About the Opportunity

This position is responsible for the day-to-day operation, maintenance, service, and management of the departmental NMR and major scientific instrumentation facilities.

What You'll Do
  • Oversee the operation of the NMR instruments: 400 MHz JEOL, 400 MHz Agilent and 600 MHz Varian. Ensure that all instruments operate at a high-performance level consistent with instrument specifications, including in collaboration with faculty and other facility support personnel.
  • Manage and oversee the operation, routine maintenance, and troubleshooting of the instruments in the facilities. Routine maintenance includes - but is not limited to - scheduled maintenance on NMR cryogen recovery system, NMR cryogen filling (liquid nitrogen and helium), shimming, mass spectrometry source cleaning, replacement of high purity gases, changing vacuum pump oil (flushing pumps), maintaining LC pumps, and calibration and tuning of all instrumentation. Overseeing the operation of instrumentation includes managing user accounts and computer systems. Trouble shooting duties include performing diagnostics and working with instrument service personnel.
  • Create, manage, and maintain user and service fee schedules for NMR and other major scientific instrumentation in collaboration with the Chairperson and faculty, and maintain appropriate billing, collecting, and accounting to document and track finances of the facilities.
  • Develop, maintain, and manage instrument use policies, including user reservation systems to schedule access time on the NMR and other instruments in consultation with the faculty and the Chairperson.
  • Prepare monthly usage reports with invoices for billing and reporting.
  • Coordinate with faculty and teaching assistants on the use of NMR and other major instruments in conjunction with undergraduate teaching labs.
  • Help develop and submit competitive grant proposals in consultation with the Chairperson and faculty to maintain and/or upgrade the facilities and purchase new instruments.
  • Contribute technical expertise for crafting research and instrumentation grant proposals.
  • Develop and maintain an NMR Facility and other Facilities webpages with current information on facilities capabilities, services, and costs, including as a means of enhancing Departmental visibility and attracting external users.
  • Provide appropriate NMR and other instrumentation services to support the needs of external users, consistent with established service fee schedule.
  • Maintain data acquisition security and provide for data maintenance (secure data backup).
  • Maintain logs and records for each instrument to track instrument performance and maintenance
  • Develop and provide NMR, GC-MS, GC-FID, LC-MS, LC-UV, UV-Vis and Fluorescence Spectroscopy user training, including to faculty, undergraduate and graduate students, and postdoctoral associates, to enable appropriate internal and external users to perform routine experiments independently. This includes training in the appropriate use of measurement instrumentation practices and uses as well as standard laboratory practices. This training also includes best safety practices.
  • Provide on-going consultation and guidance to routine users through day-to-day interactions with faculty, undergraduate and graduate students, and postdoctoral associates, including suggestions on refined/novel analysis or separation techniques or methods. Engage in collaborative research efforts with faculty and external users to support innovation.
  • Establish and achieve long-term goals for the facilities by working with the Chairperson and faculty.
  • Keep up to date on advances in the various fields of scientific measurement by reading the literature and attending meetings.
  • Use up-to-date knowledge to evaluate approaches and technologies and make recommendations for improvements to achieve research goals.
  • Manage and maintain proper housekeeping in the assigned spaces, and daily routines that include - but are not limited to - cleanliness of workstations, leak checks, room temperature checks, and proper storage of hazardous materials, such that the facilities are in good working order and ready for operations at the beginning of each workday.
  • Complete other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
  • Vigorously pursue the acquisition of additional internal and external facility users. This is required for justification in grants to replace instruments.
  • Provide expertise and assistance in assembling major instrumentation proposals
  • As needed, serve as PI, Co-PI, and/or Co-I on major instrumentation proposals
  • Assist the Chairperson and faculty in obtaining appropriate resources (space and infrastructure) for expanding capabilities and developing expansion strategies.
  • Provide outreach efforts for up-to-date informing of internal and external users of expanded capabilities
  • Pursue community outreach opportunities. This is useful for justification in grants to replace instruments.
Qualifications
  • PhD degree in chemistry, biochemistry, physics, biophysics, or a closely related field is required.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience involving:
    • Work experience with operating and maintaining/repairing chemistry research instrumentation, including but not limited to Nuclear
    • Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and some or all of the following: gas chromatography (GC), liquid chromatography (LC), and mass spectrometry (MS).
    • Experience with interpreting data from such instrumentation and in methods development to improve experiments
    • Hazardous materials handling/management experience
    • Laboratory management experience preferred
  • Advanced fundamental knowledge and technical expertise in chemistry research instrumentation, including but not limited to Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and some or all of the following: mass spectrometry (MS), liquid chromatography (LC) and gas chromatography (GC), spectroscopy, and hyphenated techniques (LC-MS and GC-MS).
  • Ability to learn, operate, and maintain major scientific instruments as well as to train student and faculty users
  • Demonstrated knowledge of laboratory techniques and standard analytical equipment (including associated chemical and physical principles), and terminology used in chemistry.
  • Knowledge of research methods, data collection, and analysis to determine viability of proposed experiments as well as an ability to make logical assessments, analyze, and solve problems independently and to develop innovative processes to achieve goals.
  • Ability to follow laboratory protocols including all health and safety rules and department, college, university, and state and federal regulations/policies and to wear appropriate personal protective equipment.
  • Ability to interface or collaborate with others for instrument maintenance and troubleshooting (e.g., electronic card replacement, vacuum system repair, instrument-computer communication corrections, etc.).
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment in a self-directed and self-motivated way while maintaining strong research and organizational standards. Must be able to respond after hours, as needed, and to flex the work schedule to ensure the smooth operation of the assigned areas.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external units, groups, and individuals; to exchange ideas professionally (to communicate key information to diverse groups of various sizes clearly and concisely); and to view ideas and challenges from different perspectives.
  • Ability to analyze and monitor overall program success and strategically plan operational changes to improve services.
  • Demonstrated strong managerial (to include supervision and training), organizational, and personnel skills. Must be able to prioritize tasks, set deadlines, and complete all assignments in a timely manner.
