Position Summary

This recruitment is for one (1) part-time (a maximum of 24 hours per week while class is in session and up to 40 hours per week during term breaks if registered for less than 6.0 credits) Student Technical Assistant position for the OSU Advantage IP & Licensing office in the Division of Research and Innovation. The OSU Advantage Technology Transfer Student Position is designed to give hands-on experience supporting administrative processes for the commercialization potential of new technologies and business concepts originating from the Oregon State University community. This position specifically serves as a software developer working to build custom GPT (Copilot) assistants. All duties will be carried out under the supervision of a Senior Licensing Manager responsible for Software within the OSU Advantage IP & Licensing team.

Position Duties

50% Software Development:
  • Set up a development and production environment to develop and launch various GPT assistants
  • Develop and deploy proof-of-concept business applications using generative AI on the Microsoft Azure AI platform and other AI platforms as needed
  • Support, maintain, and extend GPT assistants as they are developed
30% Assigned Learning Exercises, Testing, Debugging, and Documenting:
  • Complete assigned learning exercises to understand generative AI development systems and procedures using Microsoft Azure AI
  • Test and debug AI systems and applications
  • Document AI development processes, practices, and procedures
20% Education and Training:
  • Communicate and train others in the use of Microsoft Azure AI
  • Prepare technical documentation and training materials for long-term maintenance and support of development operations
  • Provide hands-on training to team members on best practices for development and support of GPT assistants
Minimum Qualifications

  • Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
  • Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard

    • Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
    • Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
    • Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
    • Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*
*International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered "full-time" by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.

Additional Required Qualifications
  • Current enrollment in a Computer Science major at Oregon State University
  • Ability to communicate professionally and clearly through email, documents, in person, and over the phone or video calls
  • Proficiency in programming languages (e.g., Python, JavaScript), data interchange formats (e.g., JSON), GitHub, and Integrated Development Environments (IDEs)
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
  • Proven ability to work independently and drive projects to completion
Preferred (Special) Qualifications
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Azure
  • Previous work experience in a technical capacity
  • Experience creating GPT assistants and generative AI applications
Working Conditions / Work Schedule
  • This role will be compensated for up to 40 hours per week of work during the summer and breaks and up to 24 hours per week during the school term. Hours are subject to variation based on fluctuations in invention disclosures and other workflow.
  • The student's work will be coordinated at the direction of the OSU Advantage Senior Licensing Manager for Software, with assignments consisting largely of independent work. Most work can be performed remotely on a flexible hourly schedule.
  • This position is expected to communicate with their supervising licensing manager on a regular basis.
  • Since many projects will involve confidential information this role may have access to detailed "pre-disclosure" technologies prior to patent filing, and will be required to sign non-disclosure agreements as a condition of employment.
