About the Job:

  • The Legal Department of ACLU of Illinois collaborates with other departments to advance civil rights and liberties through strategic litigation, advocacy with officials, and public education.
  • Focusing on fighting racism, protecting democracy, promoting LGBTQIA+ rights, and addressing issues faced by marginalized communities.
  • The LGBTQ & HIV Project aims to protect LGBTQIA+ individuals from discrimination and advocate for their rights in various areas.
  • Core priorities include litigating for trans individuals in prisons, advocating for affirming care for LGBTQIA+ youth in foster care, and addressing issues faced by LGBTQIA+ people of color and marginalized communities.

Job Description:

  • Develop and litigate cases in state and federal courts.
  • Create and participate in non-litigation efforts to advance equality for LGBTQIA+ individuals.
  • Supervise and mentor junior attorneys, engage in public education, and advance the mission of ACLU of Illinois.
  • Collaborate with partners to challenge discrimination and promote equality and justice.

Core Job Responsibilities:

  • Investigate, develop, and litigate high-impact cases.
  • Develop non-litigation strategies to advance civil rights.
  • Build relationships with leaders and organizations, serve as a spokesperson, and manage and mentor attorneys.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated interest in protecting civil rights of LGBTQIA+ individuals.
  • Strong legal aptitude and ability to produce clear written documents.
  • Experience in litigation and advocacy, ability to manage projects and diverse identities.
  • J.D. degree and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Salary and Benefits:

  • Salary range of $85,000 to $140,000 with excellent benefits.
  • Benefits include paid vacation, medical insurance, retirement plan, and more.
  • Position based in Chicago, IL, with remote work currently due to COVID-19.
