Rochambeau, The French International School located in Bethesda, MD, provides a unique education combining the French curriculum with high-quality English instruction to around 1,200 students from ages 2 to 12th grade. THE POSITION

As a School Counselor, you will be instrumental in fostering a supportive and inclusive school environment. Your primary role will involve individual counseling, small groups and planning school-wide interventions, delivering group guidance sessions and social skills activities aimed at enhancing students' self-awareness, preventing bullying, and promoting social awareness. These initiatives are designed to equip students with the necessary skills to navigate interpersonal relationships and contribute positively to their community. Your efforts will directly support our mission to create a safe and nurturing educational setting where every student can thrive.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide individual and group counseling: Offer counseling sessions to students identified as needing support each semester, with goals to improve their emotional well-being, as evidenced by pre- and post-assessment measures.
  • Collaborate with teachers: Develop and implement a monthly collaboration session with teachers to address and support the social and emotional needs of students, to integrate feedback from these sessions into classroom strategies.
  • Engage with parents and liaisons: Establish a structured quarterly meeting schedule with parents and the campus parent liaison to discuss and monitor student progress, aiming to increase parental engagement by 20% over the school year.
  • Participate in IEP conferences: Ensure 100% participation in IEP and Eligibility Determination Conferences for students under your care, providing crucial input to facilitate tailored educational support.
  • Manage referral processes: Streamline and document the referral process for accessing specialized programs.
  • Lead parent information sessions: Conduct parent workshops focused on strategies for supporting social and emotional growth at home.
  • Professional development: Engage in at least 10 hours of professional development related to secondary school counseling each year, to enhance effectiveness and stay updated with the latest educational strategies.
  • Maintain records and reports: Digitize all student counseling records and reports by the end of the current school year.
  • Attendance & Punctuality: Reliable attendance is essential. Staff must be punctual and dependable to meet Rochambeau's needs. Absences or tardiness disrupt work and burden colleagues. Attendance and reliability impact performance evaluation and continued employment.

  • Availability for occasional evening and weekend duties.
REQUIREMENTS
  • Master's Degree in School Counseling, Psychology, or Social Work, including coursework in counseling theories, psychology of adolescence, multicultural counseling, and vocational and academic assessment.
  • At least 3 years of experience in educational settings, preferably in school counseling.
  • Experience with Middle and High School students preferred.
  • State licensure or certification in school counseling is strongly desired.
  • Bilingual English and French or strength in writing in one with good comprehension in the other desired.
