The Integrated-Assistive Technology (I-AT) Augmentative/Alternative Communication Coach (AAC) supports TrueNorth's mission and is committed to the possibilities in every learner, every day. The I-AT AAC Coach supports TrueNorth's vision to be a national leader and highly valued partner with a courageous commitment to inclusive communities that equally value all people and inspire them to be active participants in our world.
The I-AT AAC Coach supports student outcomes by being responsible for the consultation/assessment/training of I-AT tools and strategies related to communication. Specifically, the I-AT AAC Coach addresses need evaluations related to communication to identify appropriate I-AT tools/devices/strategies for trial, assists in selecting/organizing vocabulary for communication systems, training, implementing, evaluating tools in educational settings, and coaching teams/districts around implementing inclusive communication systems.

Essential Job Functions:
Integrated-Assistive Technology Devices and Services
  • Understand school-based I-AT, including legal requirements and alignment to functional engagement
  • Display awareness of I-AT and AAC tools and supports and the relation to student communication profiles
  • Utilize knowledge of various categories of I-AT across educational settings
  • Engage in ongoing individual professional learning around I-AT, AAC, and coaching
  • Identify instructional/I-AT including software and apps to support language development, processing, vocabulary, etc.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of Universal Design for Learning and how to design classroom environments to maximize and support full participation by all students using available technology
  • Demonstrate skill in coaching students and staff around implementing total communication strategies
  • Collaborate with teams to identify I-AT resources at classroom, district, community, state, and national levels for funding, product, print, and electronic resources, professional learning, and technical assistance
  • Assist with identifying staff learning needs and opportunities as they relate to I-AT and AAC
  • Develop and participates in staff learning opportunities that address identified needs
  • Demonstrate an understanding of inclusive service delivery around I-AT services
Augmentative/Alternative Communication
  • Support educational teams through the AAC problem-solving assessment process
  • Demonstrate understanding of language and vocabulary needs in relation to AAC tools and how to evaluate the effectiveness of tools via information gathering techniques, data collection, and feature matching
  • Support teams through the process of vocabulary selection and organization
  • Understand specific strategies and methodologies to support receptive and expressive communication skills
  • Understand access options related to AAC devices and recognize alternative access options for communication issues in conjunction with the I-AT team
  • Engage in consistent and ongoing professional learning related to AAC
Collaboration/Communication
  • Serve effectively as a transdisciplinary team member providing services for I-AT and recognizes contributions of other disciplines in the process
  • Build partnerships with parents and private providers as team members
  • Provide consultation/coaching to district administrators regarding communication devices including budgetary planning and implications, warranties and maintenance, and home/school agreements for use
  • Utilize effective collaborative team problem-solving skills
  • Access resources within the AT community
  • Network with parents, private providers, and general educators for I-AT information and problem-solving
  • Demonstrate proficiency in oral and written communication skills, and reflective listening
  • Support district to district resource sharing and communication
Assessment, Planning, and Implementation
  • Use appropriate data gathering procedures and strategies to conduct AAC assessments of student's needs in customary environments using a team approach
  • Determine and prioritize I-AT needs based on student strengths, tasks, needs, and expectations in the educational environment (the SETT Model)
  • Collaborate with team members in formulating recommendations
  • Work with educational teams to identify/develop AAC devices/strategies in the extended assessment plan
  • Develop extended assessment plans including trial objectives, implementation strategies, data collection and evaluation measures, and modifications for further assessment if needed
  • Understand options for alternative funding sources for technology (e.g., private insurance, grants) and provide consultation to families and schools on these options
Requirements:
  • Illinois Professional Educator License with Speech and Language Pathologist approval
  • CCC-SLP (Strong CFY candidate considered)
Preferred:
  • Recent (2-3 years) training and experience working in the field of integrated-assistive technology
