Duties

Join the team providing services in outpatient, residential, and inpatient settings, offering a diverse therapeutic approach to support Veterans' recovery from substance use disorders, addictive behaviors, and co-occurring disorders. Responsibilities include providing a range of addiction treatment services to Veterans, conducting psychological testing, crisis intervention, therapy sessions, advocacy, referrals, and education on recovery. Psychotherapeutic interventions such as Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Substance Use Disorders (CBT-SUD), and more can be expected. Additional responsibilities might be assigned by Behavioral Medicine Service. Key duties include:
  • Thorough psychosocial assessments
  • Providing emergency and crisis interventions
  • Offering individual, group, or family therapy
  • Documenting direct Veteran care efficiently
  • Establishing and maintaining effective therapeutic relationships
  • Providing consultation and education on resources and VA benefits
  • Delivering clinical services in various formats
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM

Salary: Competitive compensation with regular increases. Pay is determined considering qualifications and VA's needs. Expect a salary above the Minimum Rate of the Grade when applicable.

Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year including annual leave, sick leave, and paid Federal holidays.

Applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual based on prior work experience or military service experience.

Parental Leave: After a year of employment, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave is available for the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child.

Child Care Subsidy: Employees may be eligible for a childcare subsidy after 60 days of employment if the total family income is below $144,000, covering up to 25% of eligible childcare costs.

Retirement: Federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA.

Insurance: Federal health, vision, dental, term life, and long-term care plans offered. Many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship required
  • Education: Hold a master's or doctoral degree in a related field from an accredited program. Examples include Clinical Mental Health Counseling, Addiction Counseling, and more. Licensure and proficiency in English are essential.
  • Qualified applicants may be eligible through the Grandfathering Provision per VA standards.
  • Grade Determinations: GS-9: Entry level for LPMHCs with less than one year of experience or at the master's or doctoral level. Responsibilities include intake, assessment, treatment planning, and more. Supervised role operating at the entry level.
References: VA Handbook 5005/53 provides detailed qualification standards.

Position at the GS-11 level indicates advanced experience and abilities, requiring independent practice level licensure and expertise in professional counseling. Full performance grade level for experienced LPMHCs.

Education
