POSITION SUMMARY

The Assistant Controller, in coordination with the Controller, will manage the day-to-day operations with a focus on the accounting to ensure completeness and accuracy of the information entered in the accounting system and that workflow is operating in an efficient and effective manner to meet all monthly, quarterly, annually, and ad hoc deadlines. The Assistant Controller will support the Controller role in their absence. The Assistant Controller will also manage the work and support the needs of their staff and direct reports, while also completing the tasks and duties of areas of direct responsibility within the finance organization.

The Assistant Controller has a responsibility to safeguard Association assets and ensure that policies and procedures are being properly followed.

RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES
  • The Assistant Controller will work closely with the Controller to ensure the following responsibilities and duties are performed
  • Work within the Association's financial accounting management system, including internal policies, processes, procedures, and promoting strong internal controls.
  • Ensure process documentation and internal controls are in compliance with GAAP, Association policies and funder compliance and applicable laws and regulations.
  • Ensure that work plans, calendars, checklists, etc. are utilized, maintained and current to effectively manage workflow to meet deadlines. This may require coordinating work with other departments throughout the Association.
  • Ensure that proper work papers/schedules/reconciliations are prepared monthly to properly support the balances in the accounting system.
  • Ensure that internal and external reporting is completed consistently and timely as required (e.g, monthly, quarterly, annually). This will require the supporting and managing of personnel both within the finance organization and coordinating with other departments throughout the Association.
  • Assist in the preparation and support of the annual audit and preparation of externally related reporting (e.g., 990, state filings, etc.)
  • Assist in the preparation of the annual budget and other budget needs throughout the year, as required.
  • Work with internal finance staff as well as all offices of the Association to make certain that information flow is consistent, timely, and accurate.
  • Assist and attend financial presentations for the Board, staff, and funders, as needed.
  • Assist in the hiring and retaining of accounting staff. And be responsible for the training and development of direct reports and supporting their efforts to train and develop their direct reports to maximize the performance of the finance organization.
  • Provide management with information vital to the decision-making process.
  • Assess current accounting operations, software and internal controls, offering recommendations for improvement and implementing new processes on an ongoing basis.
  • Monitor business performance metrics.
  • Perform any other related duties as may be assigned by the Controller or CFO.
QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Professional Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, from an accredited college or equivalent, required; CPA, CGMA, or CIA required.
  • 7-9+- years of experience in the accounting field with increasing levels of responsibility and broad experience working in an accounting environment.
  • Experience managing a mid to large sized staff within an accounting and/or finance organization. Experience managing a team of 4-7 professionals.
  • In-depth understanding of GAAP, basic accounting procedures, auditing, and financial reporting.
  • Non-profit accounting and operations experience preferred.
  • Working knowledge and competency with software products, including Microsoft products, employed by the finance organization. Experience with SAGE Intacct is preferred.
