Job Summary:


The UW-Madison Cryo-EM Research Center ) and the NIH-funded Midwest Center for Cryo-ET ) seek to hire a Cryo-EM Research Specialist to support the operations of our expanding cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) and cryo-electron tomography (cryo-ET) facilities.

The UW-Madison Cryo-EM Research Center and the NIH-funded Midwest Center for Cryo-ET are premier research facilities with missions to develop and to make available the advanced cryo-EM instrumentation and techniques for bioscience researchers from academia, government, or private industry laboratories.

Instruments currently include two 300 kV Titan Krios TEMs, one 200 kV Talos Arctica TEM, one 120 kV Talos L120C TEM, two Aquilos 2+ cryo-FIB-SEMs, two Vitrobot plunge-freezers, Leica EM-GP2 plunge-freezer, CryoSol VitroJet, Leica Ice high-pressure freezer, Leica cryo-confocal CLEM system, cryo-ultramicrotome, Primo micropatterning system, optical microscopes, glow discharge, carbon-coating devices, and more.


As a team member, along with other center scientists, the Cryo-EM research specialist, will be responsible for training new center users on sample preparation and instrument operations; operating instruments on behalf of users; and representing the centers within the local UW-Madison and broader research community at meetings, conferences, and exhibits.

This position is an excellent opportunity for an individual to work with cutting-edge instrumentation for cryo-EM, cryo-ET, micro-ED, and cryo-FIB milling in state-of-the-art cryo-EM research facilities.

Ideally, we are looking for a colleague with previous molecular biology, light microscopy, or electron microscopy experience. However, there are ample opportunities for team training in all cryo-EM modalities.

This Cryo-EM Research Specialist will join a team of scientists to support the growing cryo-EM research resources and community at UW-Madison.


Responsibilities:


Develops, designs, and conducts one or more research projects and organizes daily operation of projects and specialized research areas to ensure work meets established objectives under moderate supervision.


  • 40% Conducts research experiments according to established research protocols with moderate impact to the project(s). Collects data and monitors test results
  • 25% Operates, cleans, and maintains organization of research equipment and research area. Tracks inventory levels and places replenishment orders
  • 10% Reviews, analyzes, and interprets data and/or documents results for presentations and/or reporting to internal and external audiences
  • 10% Participates in the development, interpretation, and implementation of research methodology and materials
  • 5% Provides operational guidance on day-to-day activities of unit or program staff and/or student workers
  • 10% Performs literature reviews and writes reports

Education:
Required

Bachelor's Degree in Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Microbiology, Chemistry, Physics, or related field

Qualifications:


At least 1 to 2 years of relevant research experience in the biological sciences that could include an understanding of cell biology, microbiology, protein biochemistry, or another appropriate sub-discipline.

Preference for individuals with experience with light microscopy including fluorescence, and possibly electron microscopy. Experience with microscopy sample preparation techniques is desired.


The person hired must have outstanding interpersonal and communication skills, a talent for collaborative research, good organizational skills, an ability to train or teach effectively, a capacity to be self-motivated and work independently.

Experience in computational analysis of microscopy data is also desired.

Experience in correlating images or data from multiple instruments to both target a region of interest or enhance the total analysis of the sample under study is desired.

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.

Salary:
Minimum $50,000 ANNUAL (12 months)

Depending on Qualifications

The minimum starting salary for this position is $50,000 but, final salary will depend on experience and qualifications.
