Job Summary
Under the direction and supervision of a licensed clinician the Patient Care Assistant (PCA) will assist with delegated tasks of direct and indirect patient care.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education:
High school diploma or GED required.
Experience: 6 months of experience in healthcare industry and/or knowledge of basic medical terms and procedures.
Licenses/Certifications:
BLS Certification required. Certified as a Nursing Assistant by the Texas Department of Health preferred.
- Ability to understand written instructions and perform basic mathematical calculations; demonstrates skills for assigned specialty area/function or assigned procedures; including a working knowledge of basic medical terminology and computer software skills.
- Ability to perform tasks for numerous patients, communicate effectively with the team and utilize monitoring and basic care equipment.
- Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the patient served.
- Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development as it relates to the different life cycles.

Licenses/Certifications:
- Certified in Basic Life Support
or Heartsaver CPR with AED within 90 days of employment;
and one or more of the following**: - Certified as a Nursing Assistant by the Texas Department of Health
or: - Graduate of a foreign nursing program with nursing credentials/licensure in country of origin
or: - Completion of a Medical Assistant training program (Certification or Registration preferred)
or: - Certified Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) in the Emergency Department only
Experience / Knowledge / Skills:
- Prior patient care experience required
Principal Accountabilities
- Provides direct patient care for assigned patients under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse.
- Obtain pre and post treatment vitals, weight and vascular access condition. Report any unusual changes or findings to the nurse.
- Responsible for timely and accurate documentation of information related to patient treatment including vital signs, treatment parameters, and change in condition.
- Assist in the maintenance of a safe and clean working environment.
- Obtain and prepare laboratory specimens as prescribed.
- Participate in process improvement/quality improvement initiatives for respective department in collaboration with department leaders.
- Participate in professional development opportunities.
- Serve in a preceptor role where appropriate.
- Demonstrates safe work practices and attitudes; follows safety rules; works to prevent unsafe conditions and behaviors; and participates in organizational departments safety programs; adheres to all MH policies and procedures.
- Participates in a collaborative identification and reporting of patient safety issues and ensures clean and safe patient environment; seeks assistance with removal of any potential safety hazard from room and reports findings to nurse or charge nurse.
- Participate in process improvement/quality improvement initiatives for department in collaboration with department leaders.
- Participates in professional development and/or professional governance opportunities as appropriate.
- Helps orient new employees as appropriate.
- Ensures safe care to patients, staff and visitors; adheres to all Memorial Hermann policies, procedures, and standards within budgetary specifications including time management, supply management, productivity and quality of service.
- Promotes individual professional growth and development by meeting requirements for mandatory/continuing education and skills competency; supports departmentbased goals which contribute to the success of the organization; serves as preceptor, mentor and resource to less experienced staff.
