Title
Research Fellow in Multidrug-Resistant TB Epidemiology

School
Harvard Medical School

Department/Area
Tuberculosis Epidemiology

Position Description

Applications from PhD or other doctoral-level degree holders are invited for a full-time project focused on generating high-quality of evidence generated from observational treatment cohorts of multidrug-resistant (MDR) tuberculosis (TB).

The position will be based in the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine (DGHSM) at Harvard Medical School, which conducts research to improve the practice of medicine, the delivery of treatment, and the development of healthcare policies locally and worldwide.

Researchers at DGHSM have a long history of conducting research on tuberculosis, HIV, and other conditions.

The selected candidate will join a team of epidemiologists and clinicians aiming to improve access to high-quality evidence-based care for MDR-TB around the world.

The postdoctoral fellow will work with two observational cohorts:

  • The endTB observational study, comprised of over 2,600 patients in 17 countries, is
the largest multi-country study of patients receiving MDR-TB treatment with bedaquiline and delamanid.

  • The STEM-TB observational study comprises 1,000 patients receiving an all-oral shortened regimen under operational research conditions in one of three countries (Peru, Lesotho, Kazakhstan).

The postdoctoral fellow will use target trial emulation in combination with advanced epidemiologic and statistical methods to draw inferences from longitudinal data to answer pressing outstanding questions related to the safety and effectiveness of different MDR-TB regimens.

Under this NIH-funded initiative, the postdoctoral fellow will also study the impact of different methodologic approaches to reducing bias in observational tuberculosis cohorts.

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. We would like to fill this position by May 1, 2024, or as soon as possible thereafter.

Basic Qualifications
Doctoral degree in epidemiology, biostatistics, or a related field. Current PhD candidates who will graduate in 2024 may apply.

Additional Qualifications

  • Experience applying advanced epi methods, including: target trial emulation, inverse probability weighting, g-estimation and simulation studies.
  • Advanced programming skills in a statistical package such as SAS, Stata, or R.
  • Strong writing skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively.
  • Interest in global health.

Special Instructions

In your cover letter, please describe your interest in this position, the applicability of your qualifications, and briefly state your long-term career goal.
