City Network Administrator at The City of Neenah

The main goal of this role is to develop, operate, and maintain the computer networks and data center systems for the City, collaborating closely with different departments to configure and troubleshoot hardware and software. Reporting to the Information Systems Director, this position involves:

  • Installation, configuration, and administration of servers (web, database, etc.) on both Linux and Windows systems.
  • Setting up and managing datacenter hardware, including physical and virtual servers, storage, and backup systems.
  • Configuring and maintaining network infrastructure devices, software, and peripherals, while monitoring network activity and performance.
  • Creating and managing the IP network layout, ensuring internet connectivity, and supporting network expansion.
  • Testing and resolving issues with communication protocols like Ethernets, Fiber Optics, and Wireless, and occasionally working on network cabling.
  • Handling network IoT devices such as security cameras, door controllers, and UPSes.
  • Administering the City's Citrix virtual desktop and VoIP telephone system, as well as managing mobile devices.
  • Ensuring network security compliance by monitoring and configuring infrastructure devices, servers, and software.
  • Assisting in analyzing departmental software and processes to suggest improvements and enhance productivity.
  • Offering technical support to other City departments on technology-related concerns.
  • Developing program scripts and code for system integration and efficiency enhancement.
  • Documenting network procedures, creating systems documentation, and training users on software and procedures.
  • Adhering to attendance policies, being available for after-hours support, and attending technical conferences to stay updated on network software and hardware developments.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems, or related field
  • Minimum of 2 years of professional experience in information systems
  • Valid Driver's License

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Proficiency with Microsoft and Linux products, VMWare, and Citrix virtual environments
  • Experience in configuring firewalls, switches, and wireless access points, as well as IP networks
  • Familiarity with scripting languages and government-specific technology solutions
  • Understanding of security standards such as NIST, CISA, and CJIS, and basic mathematics
  • Skills in data compilation, system documentation, interpersonal relations, and communication
  • Ability to organize work, work autonomously or in a team, and prioritize effectively

Supervisory Controls:

The Director provides general instructions and spot-checks the work outcome to ensure compliance with departmental standards.

Guidelines:

Adherence to Technology Best Practices, NIST and CISA Security standards, and organizational policies for interpretation and application in various situations.

Complexity:

This role involves administrative and management tasks, troubleshooting various situations, and resolving related issues.

Contacts:

Interacts with Council, Department Heads, co-workers, vendors, citizens, and the public to exchange information, resolve problems, and make decisions.

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to alternate between sitting and standing, excellent visual acuity for data analysis, operation of office equipment, lifting up to 30 pounds, climbing ladders, and using tools for network setup.

Work Environment:

  • Primarily office-based with some remote work, minimal exposure to loud noises, moderate travel between locations.
