Substation Design Control Engineer/Designer (multiple positions)

WORK LOCATION, SCHEDULE, & TRAVEL

  • This position will be based out of Forest Park, GA (Metro Atlanta), however candidates living outside of the area may be considered with the expectation that they could successfully telework and be willing to travel to work and/or field location on a routine (to be determined) and as-needed basis.
  • Hybrid work schedule (both in-office and telecommute); currently three (3) days in-office and two (2) days telecommute (subject to adjustment).
  • Relocation assistance may be provided if the successful candidate does not currently live within a reasonable commute distance.
  • This position will require some travel (approximately 25%) and the ability to work successfully in a remote/virtual environment with access to internet service.

JOB SUMMARY

The Substation Design Control Engineer/Designer position is required to design protective relay & control schemes utilizing microprocessor-based relay systems in both green and brown field projects. This position is responsible for specifying and ordering material for substation design packages, including stock, shop fabricated, and non-stock material. The position will also transmit drawing packages and supporting specifications using the Transmission Engineering job transmittal program.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Education: (Must meet at least one of the following)

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering (Electrical preferred)
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering Technology (Electrical preferred)
  • 4-year Degree (Non-Engineering) with 3 years of relevant experience
  • Associate Degree with minimum 5 years relevant design experience
  • No Degree with minimum 8 years of relevant design or utility experience

Experience:

  • Experience using Autodesk Suite (including AutoCAD Electrical) or higher is preferred
  • Substation protective relay testing experience along with control scheme testing and commissioning experience a strong plus
  • Understanding of substation protection & control scheme operation is preferred
  • Ability to create Substation Control Design drawings from a single line wiring diagram is preferred
  • Experience in Transmission &/or Distribution Substation Operations for an electric power utility company is preferred
  • Experience in the field of Substation Engineering, Field Services, Switchboard Wiring, Power Delivery, Substation Maintenance, or Substation Construction is preferred
  • Experience working with document management & estimating systems such as Transmission Estimating and Management System (TEAMS), STOMP, MAXIMO, SCST Vault is preferred
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Office products is required

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Make SAFETY our number one priority using a "Safety First" mentality and leading by example
  • Enforce Quality Assurance guidelines for the preparation of high-quality design packages needed to construct (new or modify existing) substations using CAD-based tools, based on Southern Company design standards
  • Provide guidance on Southern Company Design Standards, procedures, and processes
  • Design protective relay & control schemes utilizing microprocessor-based relay systems in both green and brown field projects
  • Assist in the specification and ordering of material for substation design packages, including stock, shop fabricated, and non-stock material. Transmit drawing packages and supporting specifications using the Transmission Engineering job transmittal program
  • Coordinate and communicate with other departments associated with Substation Design
  • Interact with manufacturers, vendors, and Southern Company committee members to resolve equipment and material issues
  • Provide support to Substation Construction, Field Services, Project Management and Substation Maintenance
  • Perform site visits for projects, including pre-engineering meetings, pre-construction meetings, and post-job evaluation meetings. Some overnight travel will be required
  • Support Southern Company's design criteria and standardization effort
  • Handling multiple tasks simultaneously, setting priorities, and using effective time management and organizational skills to achieve project team goals
  • Position will support Southern Company storm restoration efforts
