Description

The Assistant Principal is responsible for the overall operation of the school when the Principal is not present. The Assistant Principal is responsible to report to the Principal in the areas of his specific responsibilities.

The Assistant Principal:

  • assists the principal in the general operation of the school;
  • carries out the discipline system as described in Student and Faculty Handbooks;
  • is responsible for discipline including general conduct, observance of the dress code, truancy, excessive tardiness, excessive absences, etc.;
  • interviews students dismissed from class and coordinate their re-admission; assists in teacher-student relationships; consults with parents concerning discipline problems;
  • updates the student handbook;
  • is responsible for fire and tornado drills;
  • assigns locks and lockers;
  • is responsible for student attendance records and re-admitting students to class after absences;
  • makes arrangements with the guidance counselor for students to attend summer school;
  • works with the principal in the areas of classroom visitation and the evaluation and selection of teachers;
  • prepares all materials for student enrollment, and compiles enrollment data in preparation for scheduling;
  • builds the school master schedule, and with the consultation of the principal resolves student schedule conflicts and schedules all late enrollees;
  • prepares class lists and grade report sheets and attendance sheets for the use of the teachers;
  • prepares grade reports, honor roll lists, and rank-in-class lists (at semester);
  • prepares scheduling information for distribution to visitors, and serves as a clearing house for written inquiries concerning scheduling;
  • makes and notifies faculty of schedule changes;
  • distributes demerit cards to freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior students;
  • notifies students, teachers, parents, and counselors of the administrative action(s) taken when referrals are issued by teachers;
  • supervises and establishes dates and times for student detentions;
  • arranges individual student/teacher conferences as needed;
  • confers with parents concerning their child's discipline problems;
  • acts as the chairman of the school Discipline Board;
  • calls meetings of the Discipline Board as necessary to deal with repeated offenses, demerit and/or referral accumulation, excessive absence and/or tardies, and more serious offenses where graver discipline may be necessary;
  • recommends to the Principal that students be placed on disciplinary probation based on their behavioral performance;
  • notifies parents of irregular attendance patterns by mail;
  • assists the principal with the preparation and coordination of the school calendar as well as publishes it;
  • assists in the supervision of the school's physical facilities;
  • coordinates the Advanced Placement program;
  • coordinates the assignment of substitute teachers and establishes plans for emergency teacher coverage;
  • shares with the principal and athletic director the supervision of the total extra-curricular program through attendance at various school functions;
  • helps improve the educational atmosphere in the classroom;
  • interviews prospective teachers;
  • performs other job-related duties as required.

Requirements
  • Master's Degree in School or Secondary Administration.
  • Practicing Catholic with ethical standards, personal integrity, and conduct consistent with the morals and teachings of the Catholic Church; includes faithful obedience to the Magisterium.
  • Minimum 5 years of administrative experience in Catholic schools.
  • State certification/license in administration.
