SUMMARY:

The Student Preparedness Navigator is a 12 month/year, full-time, grant-funded position with an anticipated employment period of March 1st, 2024, through August 30th, 2028. Continued employment may be available based on funding and program needs but is not guaranteed. The Student Preparedness Navigator, under supervision of the director, promotes full use of career preparedness services by A&M-Commerce's undergraduate and graduate students. Starting at time of admission, the Navigator establishes an early connection with students, guiding them to individualized services, events, and programs that prepare them for their post-graduation futures. Works to help students align interests, strengths, skills, and academic program with career opportunities.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Supports the mission of the department by creating, executing, and supporting student preparedness workshops for professional development and training.
  • As directed, engages in intentional collaboration with colleagues in Academic Advising and Student Transition and Support to connect with students about their needs and the services offered by Student Career Preparedness.
  • Executes and monitors an intentional communication and engagement effort with students from the point of admission.
  • Works with students seeking advice about the nexus between career and academic major, connecting them to people and resources who can help.
  • Provides individualized assistance and participates in programming for current and prospective students in the areas of career preparedness exploration, including helping students align interests, strengths, skills, and academic program.
  • Supports student growth as they prepare for the job market in such areas as resume writing, job search, networking, interviewing skills, salary evaluation, career and employment issues, and personal development.
  • Proactively seeks out opportunities for outreach and collaboration with academic/administrative departments and student organizations to promote career and personal development.
  • Instructs individuals and groups in the use of career services and facilities' computerized guidance programs.
  • Establishes and maintains positive rapport with the community, alumni, civic/professional organizations, local businesses and industry, public school systems, and other potential employers for the purpose of promoting the institution and its students as prospective employees.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in applicable field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience / Knowledge / Skills: Three years of related experience. Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Ability to: Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others. Ability to work with sensitive information and maintain confidentiality.

PREFERRED EDUCATION / SKILLS/ EXPERIENCE:

Master's Degree preferred. One to three years' experience in career advising, academic advising, or related student facing service in a higher education setting. Knowledge of and experience with Handshake, EAB, Famis, Cascade, Banner or equivalent higher education software.

SUPERVISION OF OTHERS:

May supervise student workers and graduate assistants.
