Position Summary: Under general supervision, performs a variety of scheduling, administrative support, record keeping and customer service tasks for the Canon City Municipal Court.

  • Performs reception and cashiering duties for municipal court, directing public to appropriate staff or attorneys, providing information in accordance with policies and regulations, and receiving and posting payments.
  • Prepares and submits cash report and monies for deposit to appropriate accounts.
  • Updates defendants' case files and tracks adherence to payment schedules, sentences, and court ordered classes.
  • Prepares legal notices, court documents, correspondence and trial information for City Prosecutor, attorneys, animal control officers, and police officers.
  • Processes and tracks summons, complaints, and parking tickets.
  • Checks defendants driving histories in Colorado Criminal Information Center (CCIC)/National Crime Information Center (NCIC) and prepares/enters bench warrants.
  • Submit convictions to state Department of Motor Vehicles
  • Provides excellent customer service to external and internal customers including but not limited to effectively listening and communicating, providing accurate information, offering solutions, assisting in resolution, and ensuring timely follow up as needed.
  • Prepares and submits outstanding balance to collections.

  • Performs duties of Municipal Court Clerk during absences.
  • Attend training, seminars, and meetings as required.

  • Familiarity with the mission, policies, goals, and procedures of the City of Canon City.
  • Knowledge of the practices, and methods of municipal court organization, operation, and administration.
  • Knowledge of Federal, State, and local rules and regulations regarding criminal justice proceedings in a municipal court.
  • Skilled in the practices and methods of cash management, cash receipting, and automated bookkeeping.
  • Knowledge of the practices and methods of court record keeping and case preparation.
  • Skilled in maintenance and administration of municipal court records.
  • Skilled in materials and equipment used in court administration, including personal computers, word processing, spreadsheet and database applications, calculators, and adding machines.
  • Ability to maintain and administer municipal court records.
  • Ability to record court proceedings and exhibits, prepare legal paperwork, and perform bailiff duties.
  • Ability to operate basic office equipment including computer terminal, telephone, fax, and calculator.
  • Ability to communicate in person and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City employees, attorneys, witnesses, other agencies, and the public.
Requirements

Minimum Qualification(s):

Please note, the following are disqualifiers from employment with the Canon City Municipal Court:
  • Any felony convictions.
  • Any misdemeanor crimes involving moral turpitude.
  • A fugitive from any jurisdiction.
  • Arrest history, despite conviction status, for any crime of moral turpitude.
Experience
  • One year of experience in a bookkeeping or clerical support role.
Education
  • High school diploma or equivalent
Licenses/Certifications
  • Have CCIC/NCIC certification at time of hire, or the ability to obtain certification within 6 months of hire.
  • Must have a valid Colorado Driver's License, or the ability to obtain one within sixty (60) days of hire, with a driving record acceptable to the City of Canon City.
Any equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the listed knowledge, abilities and skills may be substituted.

Preferred Qualification(s):

Experience
  • One year of experience as a Deputy Municipal Court Clerk or above.
  • Experience with Tyler case management software.
Education
  • Associate Degree in Criminal Justice, Criminal and Restorative Justice, Administration of Justice, or closely related area of study.

While performing the duties of this job the employee will travel within the City of Canon City and Fremont County
  • Majority of work time will be indoors with low noise levels.
  • Regularly required to sit, talk, hear, and see, using close and medium range vision.
  • Physical demands of the job require some lifting; pulling; carrying and pushing of objects -approximately 15 pounds.
  • Frequent bending, simple grasping, finger/manual dexterity, standing, walking, twisting upper body, stooping, and hearing.
  • Communicates verbally with City staff, outside agencies and the public in one-on-one settings, group settings and over the telephone.
  • Frequently required to view computer keyboards and monitors.
  • Frequently required to perform repetitive motions typing on computer keyboards.
  • Often required to work with and around standard office equipment.
  • Occasionally exposed to angry and/or dangerous individuals.
Additional Information:
  • This position will typically work Monday - Friday but, will flex to working weekends and evenings based on seasonal, organizational or event needs.
  • This position may require you to attend occasional City Council meetings and/or other meetings and events after normal work hours.
  • Extension of workday to meet deadlines may be required, depending on workload.
  • Travel within the City of Canon City and Fremont County will be required.
  • Travel out of town to attend clerk training.
