Ocient is a company specialized in hyper-scale data solutions, with its main office based in Chicago, IL, empowering organizations to analyze trillions to quadrillions of data entries within seconds.

Over the last five years, Ocient has developed a SQL compliant data store for Petabyte and larger datasets that is significantly faster than competing OLAP databases.

Position Summary
Ocient is in search of an experienced Database Architect with excellent problem-solving abilities and a strong interest in coding. You will collaborate with top-notch software architects to assist in implementing and testing a state-of-the-art data warehouse.
Responsibilities

Works throughout the entire codebase for both functions and issues

Your code will serve as a model for others and demonstrate coding standards, best practices, and patterns

Majority of time dedicated to direct contribution such as writing/reviewing software, running tests, debugging, prototyping, etc.

20% of time spent reviewing designs, conducting technical discussions, strategizing solutions, etc.

Consulted as an expert to provide guidance on design work across the entire system

Focuses on the architecture of the codebase more than individual code and features

Acts as a design leader within the organization. Successfully designs subsystems or larger components with multiple integration points into the existing infrastructure

Open to input from individuals at all levels of the organization and can effectively assess the tradeoffs of intricate design choices

Takes ownership of tasks, ensuring their completion and adherence to schedules

Actively enhances the efficiency of engineering by implementing industry best practices

Stays informed about emerging technologies and research in relevant domains to help shape engineering and design decisions

Aware of company culture and values, utilizing this knowledge to engage effectively with team members

Actively works to enhance the culture and communication within the entire engineering department

Presents architectural overviews of major components of the system to the broader team

Qualifications:

BS, MS, or PhD in computer science, computer engineering, or related technical discipline

10+ years of industry experience developing code to solve complex issues using an object-oriented programming language (e.g., C++, Java)


At least 5 years of experience working at a database software organization as one of the primary architects designing, coding, and improving their software and architecture.


  • Query Optimization, Execution Engine or I/O experience preferred
Experience with database architecture or implementation

Thorough grasp and application of data structures and algorithms

Familiarity with CPU architecture and assembly code

Demonstrated coding experience on fundamental technology

Must be prepared to engage wherever necessary, as this position will demand a hands-on attitude

Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing

Ideal Experience:

Experience in designing high-performance, distributed systems

Capability to take charge and manage all risks associated with large complex problems

Strong technical leadership and communication skills
