Primary Purpose

The University Financial Analyst is responsible for providing advanced accounting and financial analyses for the University in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles and Federal and State statutory regulations for all University financial matters. The University Financial Analyst provides a sound and relevant analysis at the University-wide and unit-level to achieve both tactical and strategic objectives.

Essential Functions

  • Regularly works on highly complex accounting assignments that are of diverse scope requiring analysis of identifiable factors using accounting and financial sources, including debt, leases, trusts, endowments, and investments for both University-wide and unit levels.
  • Develops audit schedules in coordination with the Universitys external auditors and assists in the preparation of all University financial statements.
  • Prepares tax analysis in coordination with the Universitys tax counsel and assists in the preparation of the Universitys tax returns.
  • Responsible for monitoring compliance with internal and external policies. Prepares special external reports to ensure compliance with federal and state regulations.
  • Demonstrates independent judgment in selecting methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria for obtaining solutions, completing analysis, and developing recommendations.
  • Interacts with senior internal and external contacts on matters of significance to the accounting and compliance of the organization.
  • Handles assignments where analysis of data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors and multiple sources of accounting and finance-related data such as quarterly financial statements and ratios used by executive management for University planning and decision-making.
  • Determines methods and procedures on new assignments (new tax laws, accounting standards, and compliance requirements).
  • Interprets complex reports and records for administrators and managers.
  • Responsible for coordinating the collection of information, preparing summary schedules, and responding to inquiries from departments or coordinating the resolution of issues involving other departments or functions.
  • Applies advanced accounting concepts to perform highly complex technical analysis to understand past performance, and determine present and future performance and/or resource allocations.
  • Prepares journal entries and maintains and/or reconciles complex general ledger accounts.
  • Maintains a system of internal controls over financial reporting transactions.
  • Assists in the maintenance of the units website and ensures Financial Reporting resource documents are kept current.
  • Stays current with accounting principles, trends, and industry standards for financial reporting and provides recommendations to senior management related to ongoing enhancements of University accounting policies.
  • Performs various tests of new functionality within the different enterprise systems used for financial transactions and makes recommendations to improve financial systems.
  • Performs duties of the Financial Reporting Manager in their absence.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting Finance, Business, or related field required.
  • Five (5) years of related experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • MBA, or CPA license.
  • Experience in higher education and/or nonprofit organizations desirable.

Skills/Knowledge and Expertise:

  • Expert working knowledge of accounting regulations and all federal and state laws pertaining to financial reporting.
  • Extensive experience with various analytic software tools and accounting systems.
  • Advanced skills in MS Excel and other data systems.
  • Excellent analytical and quantitative skills to develop analytical, business reports and metrics including data mining, querying/accessing and summarizing large data sets.
  • Knowledge of college and university accounting or other not-for-profit accounting preferred.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to accuracy and detail.
  • Strong ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Demonstrated ability to take primary responsibility for diverse number of tasks and complete them in a timely manner with limited supervision.
  • Demonstrates strong ability in analyzing complex issues and developing solutions and recommendations.
  • Must demonstrate the highest standard for ethics, integrity and confidentiality.
  • Strong communication skills and be able to communicate with all levels of the organization.
  • Positive attitude, proven ability to work successfully with diverse populations and

Work is primarily performed in a standard office environment with use of computer, phone and office equipment. Requires extended periods of sitting and repetitive hand/wrist motion while using computer keyboard and phone. Occasional standing, walking, climbing stairs, bending, stooping and reaching. Occasional lifting up to 25 pounds.

Work Environment/Work Week/Travel:

Duties performed during standard business hours, additional time may be required to meet business needs or deadlines. Occasional travel to distance campuses and required meetings and/or trainings.
