Estimator Job Description

As an Estimator, you'll be in charge of developing estimates and bids for construction projects. You will be responsible for reading plans, attending site visits when necessary, obtaining bids from vendors and subcontractors, and negotiating prices. You will report to the President & CEO.

Key Duties / Responsibilities of Estimator

  • Prepare construction budgets by studying drawings and specifications, projecting costs for each aspect of the work
  • Complete quantity take-offs to verify pricing
  • Determine necessary scope of work, select appropriate suppliers and subcontractors for estimates
  • Collect bids, negotiate prices, and ensure subcontractors meet project requirements
  • Review all bids for accuracy and completeness, comparing pricing across subcontractors
  • Review project specs and plans, request information for accurate pricing
  • Maintain strong relationships with subcontractors and suppliers
  • Review historical job costs for labor adjustments
  • Assist in project scheduling and communication
  • Collaborate with design team for cost-saving strategies
  • Suggest alternative materials and methods for construction

Education / Experience

  • Bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university with a minimum of 3 years' experience as a construction estimator OR minimum of 5 years' experience as a construction estimator
  • Experience in bidding design-build projects
  • Knowledge of RS Means estimating is advantageous
  • Certifications such as CPE are a plus
  • Experience with federal projects and LEED certification are beneficial

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Requirements

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, Project, and Outlook, as well as Adobe Acrobat
  • Strong background in various construction areas
  • Familiarity with construction drawings and specifications
  • Basic understanding of accounting and project management
  • Attention to detail, strong analytical skills, effective troubleshooting
  • Excellent communication and negotiation abilities
  • Strong time management and decision-making skills
  • Ability to handle pressure and meet deadlines

Physical Requirements

  • Job involves sitting, talking, and / or hearing, using hands for paperwork and typing, occasionally climbing or balancing
  • Must be able to lift and / or move up to 20 pounds, tolerate moderate to loud noise
  • Vision abilities include close and color vision

Additional Requirements / Details

  • Successful background check and drug screen required
  • Willingness to travel and complete OSHA 30 training
  • Project list required with application
