Overview

The City of Charlotte, the largest municipality in North Carolina and the 15th largest city in the United States, with a total population of more than 897,000 citizens, is seeking a dedicated Crime Scene Technician Lead to join the team at the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD). This individual will play a crucial role in supervising technicians, leading crime scene searches, and managing processing. Strong communication, organizational, and leadership skills are a must for this position.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead personnel, handle personnel issues, training, and investigations.
  • Provide technical direction and coordination in the training of Crime Scene Technicians.
  • Conduct training for police department employees and outside individuals or organizations.
  • Schedule personnel effectively for adequate staffing.
  • Communicate and engage with employees, other agencies, and the public as needed.
  • Monitor radio traffic and CAD for efficient response to Crime Scene Calls.
  • Review reports for accuracy and ensure proper documentation of evidence.
  • Maintain the integrity of evidence by following correct procedures.
  • Train and maintain specialized crime scene unit equipment.
  • Respond to crime scenes and provide assistance as necessary.
  • Stay updated by attending training on Forensic and Criminal Justice topics annually.
  • Adhere to City, Department, and Unit Policies and Performance Standards.
  • Perform other assigned duties.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Experience with crime scene processing procedures.
  • Advanced knowledge of crime scene investigation techniques and forensics.
  • Familiarity with investigative and laboratory techniques.
  • Knowledge of laws, legal codes, court procedures, and agency practices.
  • Skilled in problem-solving and effective communication.
  • Ability to multitask, work under interruptions, and be available on a rotating 24-hour schedule.
  • Ability to respond to crime scenes promptly and assist in processing.

Preferred Qualification

A four-year degree in forensic science, natural/physical science, or criminal justice, along with at least two years of relevant work experience as a crime scene investigator with CMPD, is preferred.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Graduate or Equivalent with five years of related work experience.
  • Associate's Degree with three years of related work experience.
  • Bachelor's Degree with one year of related work experience.
