Role:
Regular part-time (24 hour per week) peer support specialists assist consumers with substance use challenges on their recovery journeys. Many consumers will also have co-occurring mental health needs. Peer Support Specialists are embedded in local emergency room to assess and engage people with substance use needs.

Peer Support Specialist utilizes evidence-based practice in Project Assert and SBIRT to determine substance use needs and motivate engagement in the recovery process.

Peer Support Specialist shares their own recovery experience and helps people to consider options for their personal recovery planning. Peer Support Specialists link to local resources including Engagement Center, substance use treatment providers, medical care, community resources, etc. Peer support specialists may also help with mental health service engagement.

Peer support specialist advocates for and enhances acceptance of individuals with substance use disorders in the workplace, family and community.

Peer Support Specialists work under the supervision of the Mental Health Program Director and Program Coordinator.

Peer support specialist must have strong engagement skills and nonjudgmental approach. All work hours are outside typical business hours. Work schedule will consistently involve evenings and weekends. Potential work shifts will be between Thursday and Monday, currently 3 pm-11 pm.

Job Specific Requirements:


Peer staff must have a high school diploma and experience as a primary consumer in recovery from substance use or co-occurring issues.

A valid MI driver's license is required.

Certified Peer Support II:

must have completed Michigan training and obtained certification as a peer recovery coach or peer support specialist OR completed Connecticut Community for Addiction Recovery (CCAR) training/certification.

All potential employees need to pass both CMH and hospital pre-hire requirements including fingerprinting, vaccinations, etc.
