Job Summary

The Underwriter develops and maintains effective dealer/customer relationships. They analyze credit applications, make credit decisions, and communicate such decisions to the appropriate automobile dealerships or consumer lending branch personnel. This position is responsible for timely completion of required training applicable to the position and regular and effective application of such training in the performance of the position.

Essential Job Duties & Responsibilities
  • Approves direct and indirect retail credit requests from dealers and branch offices within the limits of authority. Works with branch lenders to evaluate the credit worthiness of applicants. Works with branch personnel regarding structuring consumer loans and evaluating the creditworthiness of loan applicants. Counsels lenders on how to communicate declined credit while maintaining good customer relationships.
  • Ensures proper credit standards are maintained with dealers and lenders. Guides and advises dealer personnel in interpreting and applying Bank's credit policies and procedures.
  • Maintains telephone and in-house contact with dealers and/or customers to solve problems lenders have referred, such as mediating customer-dealer disputes, discussing applications and contract rates.
  • Makes outside visits to new and existing dealers to maintain and/or generate new relationships. Services large dealer accounts and makes credit decisions that are in the best interest of the Bank while maintaining good, long-term dealer relationships.
Experience Needed:
  • Previous experience in customer service, sales and/or telemarketing required.
  • Experience with consumer credit preferred.
Education, Licensure & Certification Needed:
  • Degree preferred. High school education required.
Skills & Abilities Needed:
  • Knowledge of lending practices, policies and procedures as they pertain to dealer contracts and direct consumer lending.
  • Knowledge of credit scoring systems.
  • Skill in operating office equipment: personal computer, copier, facsimile and calculator.
  • Ability to use independent judgment in an environment that stresses both decision quality and quantity based on established policies and procedures.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with customers, subordinates and co-workers orally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of current federal and state regulations pertaining to credit extensions.
  • Familiarity with finance techniques used by dealerships in the auto market.
  • Ability to effectively communicate credit terms and conditions to dealership via phone, email, and/or text.
