The Category Manager (CM) will be the category expert for their assigned categories and an external and internal ambassador of products we manage. By developing category reviews and insights, identifying sales and development opportunities, developing best-in-class retail programs, and communicating recommendations to our sales team, the CM will drive growth in their categories for our retail partners. In doing so, the CM will have a significant impact on major company goals, including revenue and margin growth for the company and our retail partners. The CM will report to the Director of Category Management.

Responsibilities Include

This individual will be responsible for managing assigned categories relative to the following duties and responsibilities:

  • Developing and implementing strategic plans for assigned categories to ensure year-over-year increases in sales and margin for the company and our retailer customers. The strategic planning process will include defining category "roles" (destination, core, etc.).
  • In conjunction with our vendor partners, customers, space management, and the replenishment team, lead an annual category review process to develop best-in-class programs to be used across the business while considering demographic differences. This will include the ability to develop both customized and standard planogram versions based on retailer's needs.
  • Understand and use available data and each retailer's go to market strategy, objectives, and processes, to tell a data driven story consistent with those strategies.
  • Develop promotional and pricing programs that drive category results at retail.
  • Provide Gap Analysis reporting to identify item opportunities by retail customer.
  • Conduct financial analysis of business opportunities to meet or exceed expected revenue and profitability.
  • Conduct regular market visits to maintain awareness of competitive activity and retail conditions and inform merchandising decisions.
  • Develop innovative and creative merchandising approaches that become points of difference for Imperial.
  • Develop new and proprietary programs to set our retailers apart from their competition.
  • Enhance overall customer experience by creating new item launch ("speed-to-shelf") programs with a sense of urgency for National Brand and Private Label products.
  • Identify opportunities for strategic expansion beyond current categories - including goods, services, and experiences that will excite our customers and differentiate us versus the competition.
  • Develop proactive communication with retailers and colleagues based on the on-going assessment of the need for action.
  • Some trips include overnight and on weekends.
Key Metrics:
  • Year over year comp store sales increases for our retailers within assigned categories
  • Performance of assigned categories relative to retailers' center store and retail marketplace (IRI / ACNielsen)
  • Utilize a combination of internal purchase and metrics, market data and trends, and competitive analyses to inform strategic merchandising decisions.
  • Product revenue, operating profit, and customer satisfaction
Key Cross-functional Collaboration:

Partnering with the sales department to:
  • Develop and execute customer-specific programs.
  • Collaborate with customers directly, both existing and potential, to build sales and margin.
  • Have a thorough understanding of seasonality and global trends/events, and continually monitor competitor/industry developments.
  • Serve and communicate as internal expert on our products, industry trends, and suggest ways to stay ahead of the competition.
  • Function as the "business owner" for assigned categories.
Working with the inventory replenishment team to:
  • Maximize GM ROI and optimize SKU mix.
  • Manage the resolution of residual and slow selling inventory to meet the stagnant inventory goals as established.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree and or equivalent experience
  • 5+ years' experience in category management, marketing or merchandising in a high-volume retail, GM Retailer, CPG Company or wholesale environment with Omni Channel and Endless Aisle experience.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
  • High attention to detail
  • Ability to interview and negotiate with manufacturers and vendors.
  • Proven ability to build strong relationships with vendors and retail partners.
  • Creative and innovative thinking
  • Ability to utilize and understand IRI and ACNielsen syndicated scanning data, customer point-of-sale and loyalty data and systems used to generate the information for category reviews.
  • Ability to adapt to an ever-changing environment and cut through ambiguity.

  • Strong business acumen
  • Proficiency in MS Office, including Outlook, Word, Excel, PPT, Teams, etc.
  • Expertise and/or existing vendor relationships in housewares-related categories, a plus
