Job Summary


Under the leadership of the Executive Director for Enterprise Operations, the Unit Director(s), for Central Patient Placement & Transfer Center is directly responsible for the oversight of the Patient Capacity Management Center (PCMC) while partnering with key additional stakeholders that support capacity management & throughput (transport, hospitality, financial counseling, external dispatch and case management) while collaborating with Pediatrics & Network Affiliates to support the enterprise.

This role is responsible for fiscal, personnel and operational management in the following areas:

Transfer Center and Central Patient Placement (CPP)

Nurses:
Responsible for the oversight of all activities of the Transfer Center and CPP nurses.

Incumbent maintains in-depth knowledge of applicable EMTALA laws, UCSF transfer center & capacity management policies, data metrics associated with PCMC/Transfer Center/CPP and acts as a liaison to other cross functional operational/clinical departments for adults & pediatrics and associated personnel departments like Human Resources, Payroll, Admitting and Finance.

This position will collaborate closely with the PCMC management team to cross cover all functions and responsibilities of the work unit.

Responsible for oversight of all patient flow related processes, implementation of organizational goals and day to day management of capacity within multiple locations (Mount Zion, Mission Bay Adult areas, Parnassus SMMC/SFMH Inpatient areas).


This role will also be responsible for partnering with the Strategic Implementation Manager to review, analyze and meet transfer center volume targets while partnering with PCMC leadership on strategies for health system growth.

Department Description

PCMC is open 24-hours daily as a centralized hub to support capacity & throughput across the patient care continuum.

This department supports the transfer of patients to UCSF Medical Center and manages the throughput for all areas of the hospital(s), patient placement and flow to all inpatient & outpatient units.

The position requires an interface with physicians, nurses and all core services in managing the admissions, transfers and discharges. This is a high volume department, one that requires flexibility, a calm demeanor and excellent communication skills.

In 2023, we helped facilitate the transfer of more than 3400 patients to UCSF Medical Center and managed about 40,000 bed placements.

Required Qualifications

Five years of recent full-time acute care, critical care or emergency RN experience
Three - Five years of recent progressive managerial and administrative experience
Bachelor of Science in Nursing or higher level degree of nursing education
Demonstrated hospital management skills, with progressive expertise in patient care services. Knowledge to manage disaster incidents, critical events and ability to problem solve with critical thinking skills.
Strong interpersonal skills to create and maintain a climate for effective communication and collaborative decision making.

Strong leadership, fiscal and operations management skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with physicians, management and staff from all disciplines.

Ability to create and maintain a goal-oriented climate of teamwork, collaboration and consistent achievement of objectives.
Knowledge of relevant healthcare information technology and patient care workflows and processes.
Experience with Epic/Apex
Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel

Preferred Qualifications

Masters Degree
Specialty Certification (CENP or NE BC)
Extensive knowledge of hospital operations, including critical care
Previous administrative nursing and/or clinical experience in an academic medical center
Demonstrated knowledge of relevant regulatory requirements, as well as related legislative, accreditation, licensing and compliance environments

License/Certification

Current Licensure as Registered Nurse in the State of California.
Current American Heart Association CPR certification
Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
