The position of Director, External Communications is pivotal for managing crisis and risk communication across the organization on a global level. You will provide effective leadership during critical events, including corporate governance activities like annual meetings and will be tasked with supporting proactive and reactive communication strategies associated with various issues and crises. This includes guiding team members on planning for and responding to adverse public scrutiny in real-time and under evolving situations. An understanding of various stakeholder interests is essential for this role.

Due to the global nature of this role, availability outside of normal business hours may be required to handle potential crises. The ideal candidate should be flexible, diligent, and capable of effective prioritization.

This role will be based in Atlanta, Georgia and will directly report to the Senior Director of External Communications.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Provide expert guidance and management for global crisis communication, aiming to minimize reputational and operational impact on the organization during incidents/crises.
  • Provide leadership for key events and activities involving corporate governance, including the company's annual meeting.
  • Build and maintain effective relationships with global trade organizations, advocating for the organization's interests around science and ingredients.
  • Oversee current processes and tools used by local and global communication teams, ensuring efficient and timely dissemination of information.
  • Work closely with various teams across the organization to align strategies and communicate effectively to meet organizational objectives.
  • Monitor the organization's reputation and execute strategic plans to enhance or maintain a positive public image.
Qualifications:
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret data and leverage insights for strategic recommendations.
  • Ability to navigate complex, dynamic, and evolving situations with ease and confidence.
  • Knowledge of public policy and reputation management.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively at all levels of the organization.
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to handle multiple priorities simultaneously.
  • Willingness to travel 15-20% of the time, both domestically and internationally.
  • Experience with crisis communication planning and execution, including scenario planning and tabletop exercises.
  • Familiarity with digital communication tools and platforms, including social media management and monitoring.
  • Ability to work effectively in a high-pressure environment and maintain composure during crisis situations.
Education: Bachelor's degree in communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Marketing, Public Policy, or other relevant fields required.
