Position Summary

The Department of Epidemiology at the University of Iowa College of Public Health is seeking applicants for a temporary, full-time Research Associate position. The Research Associate will work under the direction of Mary Charlton, PhD, on NCI-funded contracts and grants related to cancer surveillance and improving access to high-quality, comprehensive cancer care in rural areas.

The Research Associate will conduct all aspects of day-to-day research project management, including: administrative functions, handling IRB applications/renewals, collaborating with internal and external stakeholders, establishing timelines and monitoring project progress to ensure successful completion of the project within the defined scope and budget, developing data collection instruments and procedures, performing data collection, data management and analysis, preparation of reports to funding agencies, and preparation of abstracts, posters and manuscripts.

Responsibilities

Research

Perform data analysis

Create workflows and routinely follow-up with research team to document and monitor milestones, timelines, and progress ensuring the successful completion of the project within defined scope and budget

Create reports and publications designed for a general audience

Assist with educational intervention delivery

Assist in preparing publications and presentations

Assist in grant proposal-writing

Conduct literature searches using common library databases (e.g., PubMed, Embase, Web of Science) and summarize the literature

Experiments, Investigations, Evaluations

Oversee primary data collection, including developing field data collection protocols and procedures

Collect and organize field notes from implementation meetings with representatives from hospitals participating in the grant

Collect, Analyze and Summarize Data; Prepare Reports; Contribute to Manuscripts, Publications

Collect and analyze data, create reports, review and explain trends; formulate and evaluate alternative solutions and/or recommendations to achieve the goals of the research project

Oversee primary data collection, including developing data collection instruments, developing and maintaining data tracking systems, managing field data collection

Assure fidelity to field data collection protocols

Monitor field data collection activity and quality

Perform data management and coding of qualitative and quantitative data

Co-author sections of research manuscripts/abstracts for submission to conferences and journals.

Administrative and Project Management

Coordinate the coding and editing of interviews and/or questionnaires; and contact subjects to arrange for their participation in various study sessions/activities. This may include the interviewing of selected research subjects.

Organize and/or participate in outreach activities that may include developing communications and training, planning/promoting complex events and/or large meetings

Assist in completing progress reports and other reporting documentation to the funding agency

Develop and submit Institutional Review Board (IRB) applications and maintain IRB status

Maintain procedures

Maintain cash handling plans according to University of Iowa requirements for paying participant incentives

Prepare agendas for project meetings

Ensure project stays on timeline

Manage project resources by maintaining organized and updated filing systems

Required Qualification

A Master's degree in public health, health services, healthcare administration or social science research or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, is required.

Experience in working with research data and the ability to clean, format, and manage datasets.

Experience developing human subject IRB applications, protocols, and/or data collection instruments.

Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.

Experience writing progress reports, manuscripts and creating figures/charts for publication.

Expert working knowledge of word processing (Word) and working knowledge of database management (Microsoft Access, Qualtrics), spreadsheet (Excel), and presentation software (PowerPoint).

Demonstrated success in writing reports, research manuscripts and/or presenting at conferences.

Desirable Qualification

Experience with design, publishing, and/or visualization software programs (e.g., Publisher, Canva, Tableau)

Relevant experience or subject matter knowledge of cancer prevention and control and/or rural health.
