The Child Care Worker implements the Crisis Nursery program to ensure the safety, wellbeing, basic needs and general care of children ages birth thru six years attending the Crisis Nursery programming. The Child Care Worker for the Crisis Nursery also works closely with the parents of the children to assess immediate family needs, make referrals for services and identify community resources that may reduce stressors impacting their ability to care for their child(ren). Reports to assigned supervisor.
**Core Responsibilities:**
Ensures the daily routine of the Crisis Nursery is followed while supervising and monitoring the safety, care and wellbeing of the children entrusted to their care.
Prepares meals and organizes mealtimes and snacks for children.
Assists children with keeping good hygiene and toileting.
Changes the diapers of infants and toddlers.
Develops schedules and routines to ensure that children have enough physical activity, rest and playtime while at the Crisis Nursery.
Provides nurturing, age appropriate and stimulating activities for infants, toddlers and young children.
Coordinates activities that promote the development of the infants/childs fine and gross motor skills.
Provides appropriate behavior management interventions and redirects childrens behavior.
Admits children to the program and completes relevant assessments, including the Relationship Assessment Tool, the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale, and the ASQ during the intake process.
Discharges children and follows-up with parents regarding their use of the Crisis Nursery.
Follows the licensing standards of health, welfare and safety and ensures staff to child ratio per license.
Follows and completes all daily maintenance and sanitation schedules.
Answers the Crisis Nursery Hotline and responds to callers expressed needs.
Refers parents to community resources and contacts other local agencies to help clients receive assistance.
Trains volunteers/interns and reports progress and/or any concerns to supervisor.
Promotes and assists in creating a friendly and welcoming environment for the parents and children.
Assists team and Crisis Nursery program staff with annual fundraising events.
Ensures outcome surveys are completed within identified timeframes.
Assists with entering outcome survey data into the data base.
Assists other Crisis Nursery staff with completing follow-up phone calls to parents.
Completes intakes, case notes, child visit logs and any other agency required paperwork with accuracy and within required timeframes.
Participates in monthly supervision and team meetings.
Participates in Crisis Nursery team meetings and comes prepared to share ideas and exchange information.
Assists as needed with client file organization.
Ensures the Crisis Nursery is stocked with needed items.
Calls maintenance to address any maintenance issues.
Collects, reviews and utilizes data and information on clients and services to inform program/department performance.
Participates in regular supervision and staff meetings as required by department.
Attends required trainings.
Performs other duties as assigned.
The Child Care Worker position has the potential for occupational exposure to blood and/or other potentially infectious waste or materials.
**Qualifications:**
Must be 21 years of age or older.
High School Diploma or GED required.
Associate Degree or Child Development Accreditation Certificate preferred.
Course work in child development, early childhood education, or childcare preferred.
Minimum one (1) year experience working with children, preferably birth to seven years.
Must demonstrate compassionate care to infants and children.
Must secure and maintain a valid CPR and First Aid certification.
Demonstrates proficient knowledge of basic infant/child care.
Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of age appropriate behavior for infants, toddlers and small children.
Demonstrates an understanding of how children are affected by crisis and trauma.
Demonstrates skills to effectively work with staff and consumers of diverse backgrounds with understanding, sensitivity and cultural competence.
Demonstrates proficient verbal and written skills to accurately and effectively communicate information to co-workers, referral sources and community members.
Effectively uses written, verbal and non-verbal communication skills to communicate with infants, children and their parents, and volunteers in a manner in which they understand.
Demonstrates skills to effectively function collaboratively with a team and independently.
Demonstrates effective time and resource management to meet the demands of the job and manage job related stress.
Demonstrates patience, professionalism and flexibility while performing duties.
Proficient skills in computer use, Microsoft Office Suite and other data management programs preferred.
Demonstrates respect and acceptance of diverse individuals and communities served by, working in partnership with or employed by Childrens Home & Aid including but not limited to race, gender, ethnicity, social-economic status, and LGBTQ populations.
Must have valid drivers license and auto insurance when the position requires an employee to operate a motor vehicle in connection with executing the positions responsibilities, which include driving to and/or from any agency function.
**Screenings:**
The applicant must submit to a criminal background check and a child abuse and neglect screening and maintain a cleared status throughout employment.
The applicant must submit to and pass a TB and immunization health screen upon hire and update TB/physicals as required by licensing standards
The applicant must clear DMV screening and remain eligible to transport clients if driving for the position is required.
**Additional Requirements:**
May need to lift and carry children up to a weight of 40 lbs independently and lift children of higher weights with assistance as a part of primary care giving.
Ability to physically interact with the children through bending, stooping, walking, sitting and rising from the floor, standing, kneeling, and bending from the waist.
Occasional lifting, handling of play equipment, training equipment and other resources involved in the practical activities and physical care of infants and young children.
May be required to obtain and maintain certification in Food Handling and Sanitation through the State of Illinois.
