Position Summary

The National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) is in search of a team leader to oversee a group of technical specialists spread across the United States. NRAO is a renowned astronomical research facility that is diverse, stimulating, and prestigious in the field. The Observatory operates various radio telescopes worldwide, including the Very Large Array (VLA) in New Mexico and the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA), which spans from Hawaii to the Caribbean.

This opportunity is for a full-time VLBA Field Group Lead located at the Domenici Science Operations Center (DSOC) in Socorro, NM. The role may also be based at the Very Large Array, around 50 miles west of Socorro. The successful candidate will oversee a team of technical personnel dispersed geographically, directly contributing to the maintenance, operations, and implementation of system upgrades for the VLBA.

As either an Engineer Group Lead or a Technical Manager, the position entails managing the technical, personnel, and operational aspects for a 21-person team directly supporting the VLBA's operations. The team's work locations span eleven sites, including ten VLBA locations and the DSOC. The Group Lead will supervise maintenance tasks and budgets, foster the development of the team's skills, and collaborate with engineers, operators, and scientists to resolve intricate operational issues.


What You Will be Doing:

  • Be hands-on: Diagnose and oversee the repair of telescope subsystems utilizing your technical expertise.
  • Be a problem-solver: Analyze equipment performance, identify areas for enhancement, document processes and system performance, and implement solutions.
  • Plan for success: Develop and manage budget allocations for labor, equipment, and materials.
  • Shape the future: Contribute to formulating new systems and best practices for the VLBA.
  • Be a team player: Lead, manage, motivate, and develop your team to achieve optimal performance, occasionally traveling to VLBA sites to collaborate with your team.
  • Contribute to a safe workplace: Develop and adhere to NRAO and government safety policies and procedures.

Work Environment

Work typically occurs in a research or development setting, involving standing, sitting, and fine hand manipulation. Close proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical equipment, occasional climbing or balancing, and exposure to various environmental conditions may be required. Travel to other NRAO sites may be necessary.


Who You Are:

  • You hold a bachelor's degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering, a relevant engineering discipline, or an equivalent blend of education and experience.
  • You possess five to seven years of practical experience and skills in operations, maintenance, and theory/design of Electronic and/or Mechanical Systems, troubleshooting complex systems, leading technical teams, and documenting repair and maintenance activities.

Although not mandatory, extended experience in the aforementioned areas including constructing, maintaining, and/or repairing radio telescopes, RF, Analog, and Digital Electronics, HVAC, Cryogenics, and/or Servo Control Systems, managing budgets, and developing safety protocols is beneficial.


Competency Summary

A strong comprehension of Electronic and/or Mechanical Systems is essential. Effective communication skills, proficiency in Microsoft Office programs, possession of a valid driver's license, and familiarity with software tools for defect tracking and inventory management are necessary.
