Geriatrics Biofluid Multi-Etiology Research Faculty

Madison, Wisconsin, United States University of Wisconsin Madison Full time

Job Summary:

The Division of Geriatrics and Gerontology welcomes applications for a new tenure track faculty position focused on development and application of biomarkers targeting the several common causes of neurodegeneration and dementia.

This new position will reside within the Department of Medicine, Division of Geriatrics and Gerontology at the UW School of Medicine and Public Health (SMPH) and join the leadership team of the Wisconsin ADRC, which is nationally renowned for its extensive expertise and innovative programs in aging and dementia research.

The motivation for this new position is three-fold.

First, while our field has largely succeeded in accurately identifying Alzheimer's disease (AD) proteinopathy, we lack the ability to identify the other major neurodegenerative diseases and their antecedent states that may be occurring or co-occurring to cause dementia.

Such copathologies may have various combinations that are asynchronous in their onsets and may vary in rate of progression.

The lack of biomarkers that detect pathology other than AD has hindered progress in identifying antemortem constituent pathologies in individuals, and their stage of progression.

Such knowledge would greatly inform prevention and treatment strategies, improve diagnosis and prognosis, and accelerate biomarker and treatment discovery. This gap in knowledge is the anticipated focus of the incumbent.

Second, the University of Wisconsin-Madison is home to a National study across the ADRC-network known as the Consortium for Clarity in ADRD Research Through Imaging, or CLARiTI, which is focused on identifying multi-etiology causes of impairment; the incumbent would join the investigator team of this study.

Three, the Wisconsin ADRC Biomarker Core seeks to expand its biomarker measurement portfolio and capacity, and the incumbent would be expected to provide leadership and expertise in these endeavors.

The major mission of the successful applicant will be to implement a biomarker research program that compliments and/or utilizes the existing biomarker capabilities within the Wisconsin Alzheimer's Disease Research Center (ADRC) and its many campus partners.

It is expected that the successful candidate will dedicate the major share of time to research initiatives and leadership. The incumbent will garner external funding to support their collaborative research program. Research outcomes are expected to be broadly generalizable to diverse communities. Preparation of successful grant applications, presentations, and peer-reviewed publications is expected.

Responsibilities:
90%: Conduct collaborative biomarker research with an emphasis on the several intersecting causes of cognitive impairment within ADRD.

5%: Teach and mentor students, postdoctoral fellows, scientists and junior faculty. Provide leadership to educational, research and outreach programs.

5%: Engage in teaching and service efforts necessary for promotion and to participate in professional and university service appropriate to the faculty rank.

The successful applicant will participate in administrative and committee work to support the clinical and scholarly missions of UW Health and the School of Medicine and Public Health.

An essential part of these duties will be working in a collegial relationship with other faculty members.

Institutional Statement on Diversity:
Diversity is a source of strength, creativity, and innovation for UW-Madison.
