GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:

The Massachusetts General Hospital Neurosciences Intensive Care Unit is recruiting a highly motivated individual to assist with ongoing and future clinical research studies. The research focus of this group is patients requiring critical care for acute neurological or neurosurgical illnesses, including traumatic brain injury, seizures, and aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage. We seek to understand and predict in-hospital neurologic worsening and subsequent recovery as well as measure the effects of treatment interventions in order to provide optimal precision medicine. Our group specifically utilizes continuous invasive and noninvasive neuromonitoring and EEG, continuous vital sign telemetry, and neuroimaging as well as electronic health record data and clinician interviews to provide clinical context.

The general responsibilities for this position are to facilitate clinical research projects including recruitment, enrollment and follow-up, set up monitoring acquisition equipment or MRI studies, assist in integrating informatics and neuromonitoring, assist in administrative functions, as well as manage and analyze data.

Given the acuity of the critical care population, call schedule availability will be required for nights and weekend enrollments or study procedures.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Major project areas of the position:
  • Administration and facilitation of clinical research projects based in the Neurosciences ICU
  • Administration, scheduling, and support of project coordination
  • Recruitment of patients into research studies focused on Traumatic Brain Injury, Subarachnoid Hemorrhage, and Status Epilepticus
  • Screening and consenting patients for specified studies
  • Supporting lab sample collection (including blood draws) and processing activities
  • Conducting neurologic and functional status exams in patients during hospitalization as well as follow-up interviews post-hospitalization
  • Reviewing research data following program QC requirements
  • Assisting with technology device integration
  • Developing data collection forms and procedures
  • Preparation of study visits including organizing supplies and creating kits
  • Independently entering research data into study databases and ensuring adherence to expected data lifecycle timeline
  • Maintaining and overseeing regulatory documentation for research studies
  • Preparing IRB applications
  • Communicating study updates and reminders to study subjects and study staff
  • Updating research data using Microsoft Excel, RedCap, and occasionally R, SQL, Python, or MATLAB
  • Maintaining cerebral physiology database
  • Setting up neurotechnology devices and brain monitoring tools including assessing signal quality and troubleshooting when necessary
  • Assisting PI to educate collaborating staff members as new projects are launched, including speaking and explaining projects at training sessions
  • Assisting in the creation of educational tools and trainings to educate staff about neurotechnology devices
  • Participation in manuscript development with opportunity for co-authorship
  • Sample tracking and inventory upkeep including inputting, manipulating, and maintaining information in clinical research databases
  • Performing other job-related duties as assigned

EDUCATION:

Bachelor's degree required. Coursework in neuroscience, psychology, biology, or other pre-medical or related field is preferred.

EXPERIENCE:

1 year of directly related experience preferred; experience that includes familiarity with data analysis software (MATLAB, R, Python) is desirable.

Intensive care unit and lab office environments.
