The Division of Students, Equity & Success creates co-curricular opportunities for student engagement that strive to build community through events, leadership trainings, and campus-wide student engagement activities. Student activities are organized to create an atmosphere of self-directed learning and opportunities for encountering diverse cultures, beliefs, and lifestyles, with an emphasis on program variety and service.

Under the direction and leadership of the Director of Student Leadership & Residential Life, the Assistant Director provides live-in, day-to-day direction for community development, Resident Assistant (RA) supervision and programming, and student leadership development within the residential setting. The Assistant Director collaborates on the planning and implementation of the student life program as well as the residential life program. The Assistant Director of Residential Life serves as an integral part of the student life team in advancing the College's commitment to student engagement, student success and retention, equity and inclusion, and student leadership.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:
Residential Life:
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive residential programming model that represents and meets the holistic needs of Shoreline's diverse student populations and promotes their social and educational development and inclusion
  • Recruit, select, train, supervise, and evaluate four Resident Assistants (RAs); lead weekly staff meetings and hold bi-weekly one-on-one meetings with student staff to support residential life programming, community development, and RA performance/growth
  • Serve as primary staff on an after-hours emergency on-call rotation to provide support for residents and live-in student staff for a newer apartment style residence hall serving approximately 245 residents
  • Work with students to establish a residential student organization that plans events and advocates for students' interests and needs within the community; recruit and advise participants
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with residents through one-on-one and group interactions, behavioral interventions, and crisis response
  • Oversee the dissemination of communication to students regarding housing and college policies and procedures, upcoming events, and important resources
  • Develop and implement strategies to assist students in the adjustment to college life and promote academic, career, and personal success through one-on-one and group interactions and behavioral interventions
  • Plan, collaborate, and execute programming to promote the personal, academic, and community development of residents living within the building
  • Work closely with the housing office to provide support to students navigating the application, move-in, and move-out process
  • Manage budget and allocation of programming resources including facilitating purchase of supplies
  • Assess the student experience and living-learning program towards continuous improvement
Conduct & Student Support:
  • Facilitate informal and formal conduct meetings with students involved in alleged violations of residential and college-wide regulations and policies, providing support to the college conduct officer as needed
  • Serve on the college behavioral intervention (Care) team and offer expertise and guidance to support students experiencing crisis
  • Serve as part of a team of employees who assist in investigation of Title IX and discrimination complaints; participate in related training and meetings as appropriate
  • Develop and implement programming and other educational interventions to promote good decision-making by students
Student Life/General:
  • Provide general support to the Office of Student Life including responding to student, staff, and visitor inquiries in-person, via phone, and online
  • Utilizing student development, leadership, and social equity theories and frameworks, facilitate the intentional development of a community that strives to meet the needs of all students/residents
  • Assist in the development of student engagement and student leadership initiatives, including coordination of workshops, training, promotion of social equity and student advocacy, in partnership with Student Life staff and campus partners
  • Support major events and programs, including campus events, e.g., Commencement, New Student Orientation, Welcome Week, Sunfest
Qualifications

REQUIRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
  • Bachelor's degree
  • Two (2) years of experience in college housing, student programs, student leadership/development, and/or college student conduct
  • Experience responding to and managing crises involving college students
  • Experience collaborating with and meeting the needs of underrepresented groups, enhancing inclusion, and advancing social justice
KNOWLEDGE OF:
  • Student development theory, leadership development theory, and equity and social equity frameworks
  • Microsoft Office Suite: Word, Excel, Outlook, Access
  • Social media platforms: Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc.
  • Techniques for effective presentations and communication in a multicultural environment
  • FERPA, Title IX, and other applicable laws, rules, ordinances, and regulations related to students
SKILL IN:
  • Listening and responding to people from diverse backgrounds including students, faculty, administration, staff, and community partners
  • Speaking publicly and communicating effectively with sensitivity
  • Solving conflict, working with individuals as well as groups
  • Effectively and efficiently gathering and analyzing information to develop solutions
  • Managing difficult or emotional situations, crises, and respond promptly to student needs
  • Developing strategies to achieve departmental and College goals
  • Making decisions, gathering feedback and consensus where needed
  • Effectively manage a team as they oversee, plan, and facilitate daily activities within the residential setting
  • Effectively advising student leaders and student organizations
  • Contributing to diversity by fostering a climate of multicultural appreciation, awareness, and responsiveness
  • Multitask and coordinate outcomes to meet deadlines while working with multiple partners
  • Prepare clear/concise materials resulting in effective oral and written communication
  • Handling difficult and sensitive situations, using sound judgement within legal guidelines
Conditions of Employment

PHYSICAL WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Ability to work in a standard office setting, use standard office equipment and physically attend meetings both on and off campus, ability to communicate in person or through appropriate means. Ability to work weekends and evenings when appropriate or needed is required.
  • Ability to live on-campus in a two-bedroom apartment
  • Participate as the primary professional in an on-call duty rotation team that provides coverage 7 days a week, including 24-hour periods during weekends, holidays, and periods of campus closure
  • Serve as on-call resource and support for the RA staff and responding to resident issues and crises
  • Work evening and weekends throughout the year
  • Ability to sit for prolonged periods of time at a desk/computer workstation, using repetitive arm, hand, and finger movements
  • Ability to work in an open office setting with frequent in-person interaction and numerous interruptions, work under pressure, and handle multiple tasks/prioritize competing demands
  • Ability to read, interpret, and explain clearly documents such as policies, instructions, reports, and procedures
  • Ability to communicate effectively in all types of situations, both verbally and in writing, before groups and individuals
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT/SALARY:
This is a full-time administrative/exempt annually contracted position with initial salary placement determined by the College dependent upon education/experience. Hiring of this position is contingent upon available funding as determined by the College President.
