SUMMARY: Assists the teacher in general daily classroom activities. Supervises students to ensure student safety. May also perform office/clerical duties at the discretion of the building principal. Follows any health plans as directed by the school nurse, and any behavior plans as directed by classroom teacher.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The key tasks and responsibilities include:
- Works with students in academic settings.
- Assists teacher in non-instructional functions and routine classroom operations.
- Assists in small group instruction.
- Assists students with classroom assignments.
- Escorts children throughout the school building.
- Assists with set up of classroom and prepares materials for use in classroom instruction.
- Assists in maintaining a disciplined, neat, orderly, and attractive learning environment.
- Uses instructional technology appropriately with students and works with students to facilitate their use of instructional technology.
- Completes attendance reports, lunch counts, and related clerical functions with the teacher or secretary.
- Covers for teacher in classroom during teacher meetings.
- Supervises students in the cafeteria and on the playground during lunch/recess periods.
- Supervises during bus duty before and after school to ensure that students safely disembark/board appropriate bus.
- Notifies nurse and teacher of any injuries or potentially unsafe situations.
- Performs office/clerical duties.
- Covers office during secretarial lunch and breaks.
- Models appropriate behavior for students.
- Maintains appropriate standards of behavior, mutual respect, and safety in classroom.
- Assess injury to determine whether nursing care is needed. Maintain knowledge of students that may have medical concerns to remain aware of potentially dangerous situations for their individual condition.
- Participates in training sessions as provided by the Reading Public Schools.
- Uses feedback to reflect critically upon his or her classroom experience and identify areas for further skill and professional development.
- Performs related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To excel in this role, the candidate must be capable of fulfilling each essential duty effectively. The following requirements reflect the necessary knowledge, skills, and/or abilities:
- Basic understanding of child development theory and principles
- Demonstrate an understanding, patient, and receptive attitude toward children
- Ability to carry out assigned duties safely and effectively
- Ability to successfully use behavior management techniques
- Ability to follow written and oral directions of classroom teacher, building administrator, and IEP requirements
- Ability to successfully complete basic first aid, CPR, and other required training
- Basic clerical and record keeping skills
- Ability to operate a computer and related software including but not limited to Microsoft Office Suite
- Ability to develop effective working relationships with students, staff and the school community
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form
- Understand confidentiality requirements regarding student academic, special education, and medical records
- Understand responsibilities as a mandated reporter under state law
- Ability to implement emergency preparedness procedures when circumstances require
- Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies
High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required; associates degree or above preferred. Secretarial/office management skills with related experience a plus.
LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS:
Must possess, or have the ability to obtain, CPR and first aid certifications.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
During job duties, the employee will be active and at times, moving around the school premises. Duties may involve sitting, standing, walking, and additional physical movements. The employee must be capable of manual tasks and using various tools.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The work setting involves a typical school environment with moderate noise levels. Interactions with students, parents, and colleagues are part of the daily routine. Some work may occur outdoors for specific activities.
