About the Indiana School for the Blind and Visually Impaired (ISBVI):

The Indiana School for the Blind and Visually Impaired has substantial knowledge and experience in educating students to master the core curriculum and expanded curriculum that teaches them how to navigate their physical, social, and personal worlds. Our expertise is accessed and used by local educators to improve the education of all of Indiana's children who are blind or have low vision. Because of its strong reputation, the school attracts highly qualified administrators and educators, and students from other states whose parents move to Indiana so that their children can attend.

Salary:

This position traditionally starts at an annual salary of $120,000. Salary for this position may be commensurate with education and job experience.

Role Overview:

The Superintendent is the chief administrative officer for the Indiana School for the Blind and Visually Impaired. You will ensure the effective operation of the school and will advise the school board about improvements for the educational, residential, and business outcomes of programs and initiatives.

The Indiana School for the Blind and Visually Impaired is engaged in a five-year plan to renovate the campus and facilities to provide improved academic and residential programming and to co-locate with the Indiana School for the Deaf. This will require savvy in navigating the expansion's administrative, legislative, budgetary, contractual, and social dynamics.

Core outcomes for the Superintendent are:

Perform all the duties prescribed by state laws and policies. Exercise the duties designated by the IBSVI School Board and mandated by statutes. Serve as the primary advisor to the ISBVI School Board in all policy development matters. Provide educational leadership and direction for the school board, employees, and collaborative programs in the community. Represent school interests on vital legislative issues, task forces, and committees. Review and evaluate organizational effectiveness, strategic planning, and goals. Be the school's representative to community groups, organizations, government agencies, and individuals invested in school programming. Provide general oversight of the school and be responsible for the efficient operations of school programs.

A Day in the Life:

Responsibilities include:

Prepare School Board meeting agendas and submit recommendations requiring board action, placing before the Board such necessary and helpful facts, information, and reports needed to ensure members make informed decisions. Ensure operations comply with school board policies, special agreements, and state, federal, and agency regulations. Engage accrediting agencies and governing authorities to review and make recommendations on changes impacting school curricula, programs, and functions. Maintain a central administrative structure that clearly articulates reporting relationships, role responsibilities, and delegation of authority. Supervise the curricular, co-curricular, and residential programs through the Systems Administrators, Principals, Program Directors, Division Directors, Finance Officer, Program Coordinators, and supervisors. Evaluate and measure academic and program outcomes. Take corrective action where needed. Communicate to all employees the actions of the Board relating to personnel matters. Also, receive from employees all communications to be made to the board. Schedule meetings with faculty, administrators, and staff to discuss improvements and welfare of the school. Furnish information to school personnel, media, and community to assist in interpreting School Board activities and actions. Prepare and present a carefully planned budget and the expenditure of school funds per state laws and school objectives. Supervise budget execution as finally adopted and approved. Prepare and submit all required and requested forms and reports as established by local, state, and national agencies.

What You'll Need for Success:

Candidates must have the following qualifications:

An earned master's degree or higher. Five (5) or more years of experience instructing students with visual and low-vision impairments. The qualifications for an Indiana teacher's certificate in visual impairment disabilities. The School Board will give preference to a candidate who has an earned certification. Five (5) or more years of experience supervising other individuals. Be an educator with the knowledge, skills, and abilities for appointment to an executive leadership role.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role manages Division Directors or roles like the Division Director role.
