About the Position:

The Operations Section of King County's Solid Waste Division is seeking applications for (2) Special Duty or Term Limited Temporary Wastewater Treatment Operators. Under the supervision of the Senior Wastewater Treatment Operator in Charge and current Wastewater Treatment Operators, the incumbents will carry out various tasks such as maintaining pumps and conveyance systems, monitoring water levels and pumps at the landfill, preparing daily control data sheets, compiling reports, and inputting data into the computer system. They will also respond to unexpected events and assist in emergencies. The role requires working in challenging conditions outdoors, dressing appropriately for all weather conditions, working overnight, and supporting Vactor Truck Operations.

What Your Responsibilities Will Include:

  • Performing control tests to assess the efficiency of landfill conveyance systems, water flow, and contaminated stormwater extraction.
  • Operating, servicing, and maintaining various equipment like pumps, valves, motors, meters, computerized motor controls, and related devices.
  • Conducting periodic tests of conveyance pump stations, pressure, temperature, water flow, and leachate levels at critical junctures.
  • Inspecting landfill water conveyance equipment and facilities to identify and implement necessary repairs.
  • Compiling daily control data sheets, reports, and inputting data into the computer system.

Your Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience in direct work with landfill wastewater conveyance facilities and systems, along with at least one (1) year of manual labor experience on a landfill.

OR

an equivalent mix of experience and education that equips the applicant with the necessary skills, knowledge, and capability to perform the job.

  • Experience in operating pumps, computerized motors, motors, meters, valves, and other landfill wastewater conveyance equipment.
  • Experience in repairing landfill wastewater conveyance systems and related equipment.
  • Ability to troubleshoot complex wastewater systems, processes, and odor control systems.
  • Proficiency in operating specialized equipment like forklifts, Vactor trucks, portable pumps, cranes, generators, and safety gear.
  • Understanding and application of safety policies, procedures, and practices when working around landfill gas and untreated wastewater, confined-space entry, fall protection, hazard communication, hazard recognition and control, hazardous energy control, and emergency response.

Required License:

  • Washington State Driver's License or an equivalent from another state.

  • Knowledge of fundamental electrical, mechanical, and plumbing trades.

  • Effective oral and written communication skills.

Working Conditions:

  • Work Locations: Primary work site is Cedar Hills Regional Landfill based at [Address].
  • Work Schedule: The position involves a 40-hour workweek, eligibility for overtime, and varying work schedules, including weekend and holiday availability.
  • Union Representation: This position falls under the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 302.
  • Duration: This recruitment aims to fill (2) Term-Limited Temporary (TLT) roles with an anticipated duration of (18) eighteen months.
  • Physical Environment: The role involves physical activities at Cedar Hills Regional Landfill, requiring the ability to walk long distances, lift up to 50 lbs, work in challenging weather conditions, and various adverse environments.
