SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory is one of 17 Department of Energy (DOE) National Laboratories. Operated by Stanford University on behalf of the DOE, SLAC develops and operates some of the world's premier science facilities, including the first hard X-ray free-electron laser. Researchers from SLAC and other premier institutions around the world use our facilities to investigate some of the most exciting and important problems facing our society in areas such as clean energy, environmental science, biomedicine, and advanced materials.

SLAC's Environmental Protection (EP) department is offering a summer internship opportunity for recently graduated or currently enrolled college students in environmental science or engineering disciplines who are seeking to gain practical work experience. This internship will primarily support SLAC's Environmental Restoration Program. The SLAC campus is over 400 acres and has extensive infrastructure for environmental monitoring. The intern will assist with developing, mapping, labeling, and populating a comprehensive database of SLAC's environmental monitoring infrastructure to assist in decision making and data management. The intern will also be involved in doing research on topics relevant to the EP department.

Your specific responsibilities include:

  • Create GIS attribute tables to assist the Restoration Group in developing a GIS map that includes environmental monitoring infrastructure, sample data, and historical report references. Organize the data in a clear format to enable map build-out by SLAC's GIS specialists.
  • Perform research on topics relevant to the EP department.
  • Cross-check historical reports in data management systems to identify data gaps.
  • Develop standard language and templates for Work Planning and Control documents.
  • Research Google Forms, Microsoft Power Apps, Qualtrics and other data management software and develop a comprehensive comparison table of software capabilities.

Note: This is an hourly, non-benefits eligible temporary-nonexempt summer student position (work at 50% full-time equivalent or more), not to exceed 980 hours in six consecutive months. Eligible applicants must be at least 18 years of age, currently enrolled in an educational program or recently graduated, and have US work authorization.

To be successful in this position you will bring:

  • Pursuing or recent degree in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Sciences, Geology, Civil Engineering or similar field. Geochemistry coursework is a plus.
  • Comfort working outside for long hours on your feet in varying environmental conditions.
  • Familiarity and comfort with Microsoft Excel and working with large datasets.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills and ability to multi-task and complete assignments with minimal supervision.
  • Enthusiasm for improving processes and systems.
  • An interest in managing data to improve system understanding.
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to read long documents and retrieve key points and data.
  • Familiarity with the following is a plus but not a requirement:
  • California environmental regulations
  • GIS
  • Databases such as MS Access or similar
  • Power Apps, other basic programming like Excel Macros or PivotTables

The expected pay range for this position is $23.10-$23.80 per hour. SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory/Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
