Summary of Purpose:


Under the guidance of the Chief Financial Officer, the Director of Buildings and Grounds plays a pivotal role in overseeing all facets of maintenance, construction, and safety within school facilities.

This position entails coordinating with governmental agencies, implementing risk management strategies, and ensuring adherence to performance and ethical standards across the district.

While this description covers primary duties, additional responsibilities may arise in alignment with the overarching objectives of the role.

Essential Functions:

Regulatory Compliance and Safety:


Ensures compliance with a spectrum of regulations including onsite Well Water, Onsite Sewer, Lead, Radon, Right-To-Know (RTK), and Life Safety Systems.

Maintains familiarity with local, state, and federal codes governing facility, custodial and maintenance activities.

Safety and Emergency Management:
Represents the district on the Safety Committee and devises emergency response plans.
Collaborates with building principals to implement and refine emergency procedures.

Maintenance and Operations Oversight:
Supervises maintenance, cleaning, and repair activities for grounds, buildings, and facilities to uphold quality and safety standards.
Coordinates preventative maintenance schedules and monitors budgetary allocations.

Construction and Project Management:
Manages the bidding process, construction, and modernization of schools and facilities, ensuring adherence to budgetary constraints.
Administers maintenance and custodial budget, conducts facility inspections, and recommends procedural enhancements.

Staff Training and Development:
Facilitates training sessions for new and existing employees, ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations.
Collaborates with the Assistant Director of Building and Grounds to identify training needs and enhance performance standards.

In conjunction with the Assistant Director of Buildings & Grounds, recommends ongoing training, as well as supervising grounds and receiving employees.

Recommends and develops work orders needed to ensure district building and grounds maintenance.
Generates various monthly reports as required.
Assists in the development of standardized procedures for maintenance and custodial functions.
Recommends and develops short- and long-range District Facility Master Plans as directed.

Along with the Assistant Director of Buildings & Grounds, reviews outstanding/incomplete work orders and provides oversight on priorities of work that needs to be completed.

Assures efficient performance and human resources management of all maintenance and custodial staff within District policies and guidelines.
Completes annual performance appraisals for all direct reports and reviews the performance appraisals for all maintenance and custodial employees.

External Relations and Public Image:
Represents the district in interactions with the Board of School Directors and community stakeholders.
Upholds positive public relations and fosters community engagement initiatives.

Budget Management and Reporting:
Compiles annual budgets, issues purchase orders, and oversees expenditure to ensure fiscal responsibility.
Generates monthly reports and maintains accurate documentation of financial transactions.

Minimum Qualifications and Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in engineering or related field, with 8-10 years of supervisory experience in maintenance and facilities management.
Proficiency in HVAC systems, electrical systems, construction, and safety protocols.
Knowledge of regulatory requirements such as asbestos, lead, and hazardous materials disposal.

Must hold and maintain a valid driver's license for the type of equipment to be driven, with no serious violations.
