Pharmacist (Clinical Specialist) duties includes, but are not limited to the follow:


Processing prescriptions including entry of written prescriptions into the computer system and finishing electronic medication orders, incorporating prescription review to identify and address problems with doses, formulary, drug interactions and allergies.

Continuously monitoring drug side effects, allergic reactions, toxicity, improper dosage regimens, and laboratory test data, contacting prescribers, when necessary, to ensure a good therapeutic outcome.

Exercising proper stewardship when handling or overseeing prescribing, dispensing or inventory of Controlled Substances.

Overseeing and directing the work of Pharmacy Technicians assigned to their area, ensuring that all products, to include IV Admixtures and unit dose medications, are prepared, labeled, and delivered IAW locally established guidelines.

Greeting patients presenting for window pickup, counseling them on medication dosing, proper administration of the product, possible side effects, what to do in case of an allergic response and the importance of adherence to directions in achieving a good outcome.

Processing Outpatient prescriptions in VistA, filling, dispensing, and providing consultation to health care providers on issues related to medication therapy to enhance probability of good therapeutic outcomes.

Exercising proper stewardship when handling or overseeing prescribing, dispensing or inventory of Controlled Substances. 1

Checking all prescriptions filled by technicians prior to dispensing, utilizing technicians to achieve maximum productivity in the absence of the Supervisor or when working in a one-to-one situation.

Orienting and training new pharmacy employees and students in each aspect of the processes utilized to carry out the various functions within pharmacy to produce a safe, efficient, patient centered/staff friendly, pharmaceutical product.

Providing assistance and training to providers and other staff members to ensure safe, efficient operations in the production and delivery of quality pharmaceutical services.

Documenting errors and interventions for use in improving the processes utilized in producing pharmaceutical services and products.
Maintaining all training required for using VA computers and handling protected patient information (HIPAA).

Maintaining computer skills and familiarity with VA computer systems utilized in the provision of pharmaceutical care at an efficient level.

Work Schedule
: 7:00a-3:30pm, 8:00am-4:30pm, 9:30am-6:00pm, rotating weekend, holidays and off tour coverage as needed.
