Summary Objective

The purpose of this position is to develop safety programs and prepare safety materials. Conduct inspections and training programs.

This class works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.

  • Assists in planning, developing and implementing policies, procedures and programs.
  • Prepares and disseminates safety education and training materials and conducts safety training.
  • Provides technical assistance and instruction concerning safe work habits and methods to enforce safety procedures, safe working conditions, safe operation of equipment and employee safety.
  • Inspects vehicles or facilities for safety hazards, recommends corrective action and prepares progress reports.
  • Reviews safety policies and procedures and recommends modifications for compliance with OSHA rules and regulations.
  • Investigates accidents and complaints of unsafe conditions, interviews employees to gather information and prepares reports on findings.
  • Represents the department to government agencies and the public to answer questions and provide information concerning regulations, programs and services.
  • Performs related work as assigned.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's Degree in Education, Environmental Health, Industrial Hygiene, Business or Public Administration or related discipline.
  • One (1) year of occupational safety and health reporting, inspections or training OR risk management experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.

  • Performs sedentary work that involves walking or standing some of the time and involves exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or sustained keyboard operations.
UNAVOIDABLE HAZARDS (WORK ENVIRONMENT)

Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken.


SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES
FLEET AND FACILITIES MANAGEMENT- SAFETY AND SECURITY DIVISION

  • Must have a certification in state of Kentucky Asbestos Program, Lead Program, and Underground Storage Tank Program, or obtain within six months of employment.
  • Must have certification in First Aid/CPR, or obtain within three months of employment.

Every manager/supervisor is responsible for enforcing all safety rules and regulations.

In addition, they are responsible for ensuring that a safe work environment is maintained, safe work practices are followed and employees are properly trained.
