Overview:


Princeton University is seeking an experienced, seasoned candidate to fill a Senior Manager of Projects position to assist and support the construction and renovation of Princeton University animal facilities.

Reporting to the Executive Director of Laboratory Animal Resources (LAR) in the Office of the Dean for Research, the Senior Manager of Projects will oversee all construction and renovation projects for Princeton's centralized animal facilities, animal satellite space, and animal research labs.

This position will be managing multiple projects simultaneously for all areas of the animal research program for both animal research programs, including the development of the Hopewell Research Facility and on-campus animal research facility development.

While this position will mainly focus on new construction and renovations, it will also include involvement in operationally modifying and improving existing animal facilities for use.

There are currently 12 Office of Capital Project (OCP) projects that LAR has some role with.

The Hopewell Research Facility is a 70,000+ building with a projected operational budget of $160M+ per year. The estimated costs associated with construction in this area of focus is $140M over the next five years .


Working closely with multiple departments in the University's central Facilities division including, but not limited to, Capital Projects, the University Architect, Special Facilities, the Senior Manager recommends procedures and best practices for maintenance, repair and capital renewal of these facilities and systems related to laboratory animal care.

The incumbent will also lead various operational and regulatory projects for the department. The successful candidate will undertake the following essential duties and responsibilities as well as others as assigned.

This is a 5-year Term position .

Responsibilities:

Project Management

  • Coordinate construction and renovation project activities for LAR and the animal research community including but not limited to coordination of regulatory and accreditation requirements for animal facilities and overseeing the proper inclusion of same in the project objectives, liaising with the Office of Capital Projects project teams, coordinating unfixed capital equipment needs, logistics and departmental communications.
  • Serves as the deputy point of contact for LAR capital renewal and renovation, and new construction projects, securing cost and time estimates and controls cost and time of work performed by internal and external vendors, maintaining inventories and contracts for equipment as appropriate
  • Participate in tracking space assignment, utilization and management for LAR and the University.
  • Participate in construction and renovation project activities involving the University's centralized animal facilities, animal satellite spaces, and animal research labs.
  • Respond to inquiries, troubleshoot, and distribute information regarding the status of the various projects with key stakeholders.
  • Coordinate project monitoring and coordination with University partners; animal research faculty, students, and staff; and vendors during construction, including ensuring that planned construction does not cause harm to the animals or ensuring proper swing space is provided.
  • Track projects costs to ensure compliance with the LAR budget and capital plan.
  • Coordinate timelines for animal, equipment and supply moves as it relates to construction and renovation projects.
  • Monitor and ensure that construction parameters meet or exceed those facility design regulatory requirements related to compliance with the Animal Welfare Act (USDA), the Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (federally funded research), and AAALAC (accreditation). Additionally, ensuring compliance with state, local and University regulations.
  • Participate in communications plans to animal research faculty, students and staff, as well as to partner departments within the University.
Organizational Planning, Reporting and Communication

  • Engage in "neighbor" role for all construction projects that have the potential to impact animal care operations and animal research, ensuring that the potential impacts are minimized and communicated to animal researcher priorities.
  • Assist in coordination of budgets for unfixed capital equipment and supply needs to animal facilities post-new construction or renovation.
  • Evaluate processes, collect, organize, analyze, and interpret data as needed for regulatory compliance of animal facility design.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Engineering, Construction management or related field experience required; an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of specific degree(s).
  • 10 years of related experience.
  • Knowledge of all phases of physical plant operation, maintenance, and repair; planning, scheduling, management and administration of animal care and plant operations.
  • Demonstrates skills in establishing cost estimate and budget development, record keeping and report writing experience
  • Knowledge and experience with state and local safety, fire, construction, and public access regulations
  • Working knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations and safety practices; familiarity with reading blueprints and interpreting building codes; familiarity with security practices and protocols, including building security systems, loss prevention and animal and life safety.
  • Working knowledge and experience with on-line building management systems and software programs for animal life systems
  • Strong analytical ability and creative problem-solving skills, including defining problems, collecting data, and presenting a compelling case for recommendation
  • Ability to express oneself clearly and concisely in presenting ideas and concepts in both verbal and written form
  • Evidence of strong customer service skills and success as part of collaborative project teams.
  • High ethical and confidentiality standards in interactions with faculty, students, staff, vendors and the public.
  • Ability to work successfully in both a team environment and individual basis.
  • Attention to detail and persistence to ensure that project elements are complete and satisfactory
  • Ability to work well under pressure with multiple/competing deadlines
  • The final candidate will be required to complete a background check successfully
