Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States Aurora CO Full time

Who We Are

Aurora (Nasdaq: AUR) is delivering the benefits of self-driving technology safely, quickly, and broadly to make transportation safer, increasingly accessible, and more reliable and efficient than ever before. The Aurora Driver is a self-driving system designed to operate multiple vehicle types, from freight-hauling semi-trucks to ride-hailing passenger vehicles, and underpins Aurora Horizon and Aurora Connect, its driver-as-a-service products for trucking and ride-hailing. Aurora is working with industry leaders across the transportation ecosystem, including Toyota, FedEx, Volvo Trucks, PACCAR, Uber, Uber Freight, U.S. Xpress, Werner, Covenant, Schneider, and Ryder. For Aurora's latest news, visit and @aurora_inno on Twitter.

Aurora hires talented people with diverse backgrounds who are ready to help build a transportation ecosystem that will make our roads safer, get crucial goods where they need to go, and make mobility more efficient and accessible for all. We're searching for a Senior Machine Learning Engineer (Simulation).

Our Simulation ML and Data Science team is responsible for developing data-driven approaches to advance development and validation of the Aurora Driver. We build technology that helps make the most use of our on-road data by improving signals from simulation tests and creating variations that challenge the Aurora Driver's capabilities. We help establish offline testing as a trusted and efficient complement to on-road driving.

While interviewing, you will be expected to intelligently reason about data-driven approaches to leverage offline simulation in the verification and validation of autonomous driving. Your role will interface with Product, Autonomy Development, Systems and Safety Engineering teams and will drive mission-critical decisions in a multi-trillion dollar industry.

In this role, you will

  • Developing new actor models and/or performance metrics to serve our use cases
  • Support our model development workflow, such as data collection, processing and other infrastructure.
  • Meet with partners in autonomy and validation teams to understand their use case and constraints that will inform our projects and technical approach.
  • Work with our sibling team in Core Simulation to add any core functionality required to support our actor models
  • Develop tooling for any necessary visualization or extraction of insights from developing and running our models.
  • Support your team with code reviews and ideas as part of a collaborative environment.

Required Qualifications

  • BS (3yrs+), MS (1yr+ with exceptions for strong candidates) or PhD in a robotics/AV/ML related area
  • CV/ML model building experience (data preparation, training, evaluation)
  • Robotics-related domain knowledge (need not be AV-specific. eg. general controls, manipulation, CV etc. would be fine)
  • Must have working knowledge of either C++ or Python, as a minimum requirement

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with simulation, perception or motion planning for autonomous vehicles.
  • Knowledge of Pytorch or other ML frameworks
  • Experience deploying ML models in production environments
  • Publications in top-tier conferences (not workshops).

The base salary range for this position is $168K-$210K per year. Aurora's pay ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, the successful candidate's starting base pay will be determined based on factors including job-related skills, experience, qualifications, relevant education or training, and market conditions. These ranges may be modified in the future. The successful candidate will also be eligible for an annual bonus, equity compensation, and benefits.
