AP Specialist II – Front End

Job Purpose

This role is the lead corporate investigator for all Point-of-Sale (POS) fraudulent transactions across the SEG enterprise. This includes but is not limited to the front end, self-checkout, and cash office.

In addition to identifying suspect transactions, this role will determine the severity of loss across all stores supporting development of business cases to ensure POS controls are implemented to prevent reoccurrences and measurably decrease shrink and increase profitability.

This role will also be the primary trainer for the Asset Protection department on the Appriss point-of-sale technology and usage.

Essential Responsibilities

Conduct investigations into theft and fraud occurring on the front-end.

This includes acts of merchandise, cash and lottery theft and fraud or other intentional acts resulting in losses to the company by internal (associate) or external suspects.

Lead the Asset Protection Operations Center's efforts as part of the High Loss Investigations program into stores with the highest center-store inventory losses within the company.

Create and develop investigations within the Asset Protection Information Network (APIN), assigning investigations to AP field resources or other members of the APOC for resolution as needed.

Maintain a thorough understanding of POS exception-based reporting tools and utilize this software effectively in detecting, investigating, and resolving problems associated with front-end related losses.


Develop and facilitate the training of AP Field, AP Operations Center and other department and SSC staff for all POS software theft detection processes and programs to include work items, queries, and sustainability of the same.

Identify when theft methodologies of cashier's change, after POS countermeasures previously identified and implemented are deployed.

Continuously monitor and adjust software theft detection metrics, validate, and communicate these changes to the AP field and Operations (Smart Check) teams.

Consistently track and report out on enhancements to demonstrate effectiveness as measured by reduced number of incidents and amount saved through cost reduction analysis.

Identify theft methodologies, determining frequency and severity to establish and deploy root cause analysis.

Responsible for making recommendations to enhance Point of Sale (POS) controls or Appriss capabilities supported by developing business cases that produce compelling return on investment (ROI) and that proactively prevent intentional theft (shrink) exposure.

Through independent analysis, sequentially identify risk associated with these recommendations and potential negative impact on store management (approving/denying transactions - labor) and customers (service declines).

As a member of the Asset Protection Operations Center, assist with events and critical incident response occurring at store and SSC sites.

Provide CCTV video or photo extracts along with incident summaries to Department and Executive Leadership as required.

  • At least three (3) years' experience in asset protection/loss prevention, forensic accounting, auditing, or related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • PC skills including working knowledge and a high level of proficiency with the primary Microsoft Office applications to include excel.
  • Possess financial acumen, flexibility, resiliency, and self-direction.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and investigative skills.
  • Proficiency using data base systems.
  • Possess a valid driver's license with a satisfactory driving record.
  • Ability to read, write and speak English proficiently.
  • Ability to maintain the highest level of confidentiality
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Preferred

  • Expertise in entire scope of Front-End Operations.
  • Acts as a resource for other team members, will lead projects with limited risks and resource requirements.
  • Solves complex problems by taking new perspectives on existing solutions, exercises judgement

  • Strong project management skills, with experience in business case writing/presentations.
  • Experience in developing and producing job aides, procedures, and training modules.
  • Ability to conduct technical training on POS systems to others.
  • Intermediate skill in software programming logic.
