The San Diego State University (SDSU) Library invites applications for an Assessment Librarian, a 12-month, tenure-track position to be appointed at the rank of Senior Assistant Librarian, beginning in July 2024. We are looking for someone who is passionate about the potential for evidence-based assessment to transform library spaces and services and committed to building meaningful collaboration with campus and community partners. We seek a skilled communicator who can collaborate with colleagues to tell the Library's story about its role in supporting student success and faculty scholarship, promote engagement with faculty colleagues and campus partners, advance librarian-led inquiry, and help to build a culture of assessment and organizational improvement throughout the University Library.

The Library supports, promotes, and extends the distinctive teaching, learning, scholarship, and community engagement initiatives of the university, especially as those are highlighted in the university strategic plan. The Library is committed to service and student-centered innovation, with recent initiatives including the Digital Humanities Center, build IT makerspace, and partnerships focused on student success, such as the Latinx Resource Center. The University has recently adopted a set of institutional learning outcomes that include information literacy and critical thinking, an area of opportunity for this position. The Assessment Librarian will join an evolving Collections unit that collaborates with colleagues across the library to advance research services, technical services, scholarly communication and open access initiatives, as well as digital scholarship and special collections. The Assessment Librarian will also provide critical support to the Office of the Dean and to Library Marketing and Communications. Primary Duties and Responsibilities

The Assessment Librarian will:

Coordinate data collection, normalization, and reporting from a variety of existing library and university data sources for institutional surveys and library reports (e.g. ACRL, IPEDS). Collaborate with SDSU and California State University (CSU)-wide assessment initiatives, including CSU Graduation Initiative 2025 and the SDSU Information Literacy General Education learning objective outcomes for institutional accreditation.Collaborate with librarians to generate reports for programmatic accreditation as well as qualitative and quantitative assessments of library services, collections, and the library user experience.Develop and maintain partnerships with SDSU Associated Students and Student Affairs Campus Diversity to assess student success efforts relating to the Library, particularly in areas that positively affect academic and social engagement.Identify opportunities for data automation, peer institution benchmarking, and space use assessment.Develop creative and effective means of visualizing data to uncover and communicate relationships and trends and to identify opportunities for ongoing service improvements.Follow best practices in the ethical design of studies and analysis of user data.Assist library employees as a subject matter expert for assessment management systems (e.g. LibInsight, Nvivo, Tableau, Alma Analytics, etc.)Perform other duties as assigned.Qualifications

In addition to meeting at least two of the BIE criteria, other required qualifications include the following:

Graduate degree from an ALA-accredited library program or foreign equivalentExperience with quantitative and qualitative data analysis and familiarity with data-driven decision-making.Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with students, faculty, and staff.Understanding of the ethical use of data, including data collection, data analysis, and data dissemination, and experience with or awareness of data security standards such as FERPA. Experience using software for data visualization and analysis. Cultural competence and sensitivity in working at a university in which students, faculty, and staff are broadly diverse across many facets of identity, including but not limited to gender, ethnicity, nationality, sexual orientation, age, and religion. Demonstrated potential for meeting the requirements for tenure and promotion based on library service, professional growth, and service to the University and community. Understanding of the current research, information sources, and scholarly trends in library assessment.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with assessment in a library environment or experience developing and implementing an assessment plan.Experience with analysis and visualization software and tools (e.g., Excel, Access, Nvivo, Tableau, R-Studio, etc.).Coursework in qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis, or data visualization fields such as applied statistics, data science, or business analytics.Knowledge of user experience/UX and universal designKnowledge of research impact metrics, bibliometrics, altmetrics, and/or research assessment.Knowledge of the ACRL Proficiencies for Assessment in Academic Libraries (formerly Proficiencies for Assessment Librarians and Coordinators).Familiarity with professional codes of ethics for librarians such as the American Library Association Code of Ethics and the IFLA Code of Ethics for Librarians and other Information Workers.Familiarity with library collection management standards and tools, such as reporting modules within Integrated Library Systems (ILS) and digital repositories (e.g., Project COUNTER, Alma Analytics)Familiarity with current national initiatives (e.g., LibQUAL , ROI, NSSE, IPEDS/NCES, Ithaka Survey, balanced scorecard, etc.), influential library assessment methods (EBLIP, SAILS, RAILS, Conspectus, etc.), and relevant library standards such as the ACRL Standards for Libraries in Higher Education.

This is a full-time, tenure-track faculty position. Tenure is dependent upon continuing library service effectiveness, professional growth and development, and service to the library, University, and community.

The minimum salary for this position is based on the current CSU salary schedule for Senior Assistant Librarians and may be revised based on contract collective bargaining. The anticipated salary range is from $74,280 to $77,500. Salary placement will be based on the selected candidate's qualifications and experience, and salaries higher than the published maximums may be offered in limited circumstances.
